I'd do an IC before a RIP kit also.

Your R came stock with a 15g. All 850s came with either a 15g (all HPTs) or a 13g (all LPTs i.e. only the 97 GLT). I don't know what the numbers mean either, beyond varying directly with size/boost.

If you bump the turbo, then bump the injectors and the tune to match.

So then my root question becomes how much power will this 15g turbo make when fully optimized. By that I mean big cats and downtube, and why are some guys running e85 in big power volvos. Am I wasting money on 94 octane?

E85 power explained.

Your turbo is just as much a bottleneck as everything else at this point. No more, no less. You have headroom with a 15.

Want the most power for the least outlay of time and money? Add a boost gauge and manual boost controller. More power for $100 than absolutely anything else.

In reply to Roberts question, I am taking the 'claimed' values from Rica. This is based on a standard 2000 'R' and should not require any other mods. The only other mod is a K&N filter. They also claim (more importantly) 300ft/lb torque. Is it real? Not sure, but as I have the Softloader, I can re-tune to standard and it is noticeably slower, and the torque builds more slowly. The claim is the tune puts out 18psi (confirmed by dealer) turbo pressure on the 19T turbo. I also have a Xemodex ETM, but that should not have any real affect. Add that the 2000 has closer ration 5 speed auto it does pull more than well enough for me, whatever the real numbers are.

Right now I have the one from ipd. I have also read Lucky's thing on mbc and ecu tamed boost, so I don't want to bend anything. I was satisfied when I had this setup in my 95 turbo, with the ipd tune and parts the car was snap fast and traction would come loose on demand... So I'm going to see what I can do with this cars stock turbo and intercooler. Once I have begun to develop target boost and a proper exhaust .will go to dyno and post!!

Wish you the best of luck. Upgrading to a T16 will give you much better boost is you find the 15 is not cutting it. Lucky also has upgrade kits for the turbos in billet form, so may be another way to tackle more power.

It is really, really hard for me to believe the "RIP kit" does anything at all. There might be a cosmetic benefit if you like the way the shiny tubes look, but wrap some tinfoil around the existing ones and save yourself a couple hundo. Never seen one that wasn't absurdly priced.

A bit of info from the hvac industry: every time air must flow around a corner it's pressure is lessened. Therefore the mass air flow is less. So the less bends an intake has the more power it will make. Our stock ic piping is probably 14" longer than necessary. Will be putting the scan tool on my car today for first time, cel or MIL is burned out I'm guessing
