97 volvo 850 extreme noise and vibration (Bad wheel bearing)

Post by bcschmidt »

hey all, forts post here. last year i bought a used 97 850 and drove it untill xmas eve. When what i thought to have had a axle failure. i was driving to town to pick up some food, and i heard a low grumble that sounded like ice buildup. it got worse in my 20 min drive to town, so i drove it to work and left it there for the night. when i got back to work (dealership) we hoisted her up and took a look. We fired it up and spun the wheels and saw the inner cv joint bounce up and down. The next day i had off, but i got a warrantied axle since it was replaced 3 months prior so they changed the axle. When they went for a test drive it had the same issue, vibration and noise. They further diagnosed tranny mounts and engine mounts gone, the whole engine moves around pretty good. They also said that on the drivers side, the bearing in the actual transmission is screwed. But another mechanic that was there said it could be the mounts that broke and are causing the noise and vibration. So they changed the axle for no reason and left it at that. Has anyone here had the same issues when mounts broke? my idea is that the weight of the engine is pulling the axle out of alignment and making that noise and vibration. thanks for the help.

If all the mounts on the engine are broken you do stress the carrier and axle CV joints. The engine mounts arent expensive and its only a few hours labor to put them in. Start there.

i found a kit that comes with 4 engine mounts, ill have to find a kit for transmission mounts too. i was thinking about throwing her up on a hoiste, and jack up the motor and transmission a bit, start it up spin the wheels and see if it still makes the noises, hopefully it ll relieve the stress on the axles and spin freely without noise and vibration. I'm hoping that's what the problem is.

Which axle is the problem, the RH or LH (driver's side)?

The 2 engine mounts that typically fail are the one under the crank pulley (which is the more likely to cause your problem) and the top torque mount to the middle of the firewall. When checking the crank area mount, gently jack it up as they shear and may look intact but are only held in place by the weight of the engine.

the problem is on the drivers side, i was going to jack it up on the hoist today, and spin the tires to see if the noise persists after playing with the jack level. if its still there, i found another car 3 hours away that im going to go take a look at. i made a list of what else my 850 needs, and its alot.. :(
