Drive shaft overhaul

Post by orangeworx »

Hello everyone
I'm new to posting but have read a ton on here and the search didn't yield an answer to my present question.
I decided to rebuild my drive axles because of a boot tear and yes I know I could have bought reman. axles but I decided I'd do the long job.
I've checked this write up here, https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com but its not the same and I'm really only needing to know how to tell which side is up (or out) when putting the cage back in the CV with the star shape thingamajig and balls.
Wouldn't like to put it all together and realize I effed up.
Any ideas? Images or exploded views. I could post pics of the parts as soon as I can. The cage has a small lip on one side, wider on the other and the star has funnel lookin taper so there's got to be an in and out.

Thanks for taking the time
Fredo

Hey @xHeart and thanks for your link... I believe i can see in one specific picture how the cage and star shape ball retainer come into place...
Based on the picture just before the whack, the cage's thinner ring is pointing upwards (away from wheel) and the star shape's stepped side is as well.
Seems a little complicated to described these things, I'm basing myself on your picture though.

that's what I should be seeing when I'm reinstalling

these should be on the inside of the cup

Thanks for the help

So I've put it together as per your image and I noticed heat marks over where the balls go. I believe the grease broke down which lead to overheating but I'm not sure if this warrants a replacement of the axle. Your thoughts would be appreciated.
I've attached a pic showing the assembled CV.

Your assembly looks right.

CV joint heating up is expected. These can withstand extreme temps.
Take a magnifier and look for hairline crack. If none then be fearless.
Use quality C.V joint grease such as Liqui-Moly.

Take your time and enjoy good work.

xHeart: thank you for your input. I took my time to clean it up and reassemble, I was just not certain which way the cage went in, if the thicker lip was up or down and how it would affect the axle if it were flipped.
But thanks again, I highly appreciate your input and knowledge.

Have a good one,
Fredo

I'll try to document the overhaul of the other shaft and put it on here.

You may have passed this point, but FWIW.
The cage with thicker lip, in my setup, went in first. Then it took seesawing the cage to insert each ball.

One significant difference between the 2001 CV and 2007 CV was the vent design, i.e the axle screw cavity was tunneled through and opened into the CV bowl. Which means some grease will reach the screw, any accumulation of fluid inside the CV can be drained, air and heat would escape, and refilling of fresh grease from the screwing location is possible too.

Hello again xHeart and thanks for following up.
I went about the continuation of the overhaul and pulled the passenger side shaft and to my utter disbelief one of the roller was completely destroyed... The needle bearing was ripped apart, the race and track were just hanging there only because they couldn't really separate.
Now what is interesting is that I don't recall hearing noise from the right side.
Attached is what came out of the inner cup.
Top is OK roller (there's a second one that's in ok shape as well)
Bottom is the destroyed roller.

...
Is this from the support bearing on passenger side axle?

That's from inside the cup, tranny side. I managed to find a place where they rebuild axles and grabbed a roller from them. Apparently it's a problem with Volvos where the engine mounts mess up the axles. I wonder if there's any truth to that... In all cases, I believe I'm only just extending the lifespan of my vehicle.
