1999 S70 Flashing Arrow and ETS light on

Post by goldmandan »

I picked up a 99 S70. The ETS light is on, the check engine, service light the battery was dead and I boosted it, got the car running and drove 50 miles back home. I went to start it up again and go for a quick ride and noticed the flashing transmission arrow was on..... also, the car seems to be starting off in 2nd gear as if it's in "winter" mode. I am wondering if there's any relation between the ETS and the flashing arrow? I have cleared the codes and the flashing arrow comes back on almost immediately again. I checked trans fluid and it looks clear and not too dirty and level is full. The mileage on the car is 88k. 2.4

Turn the key on and "row" the shifter back and forth about 20 times, fairly quickly.
The PNP switch contacts may be dirty and this usually cleans them.
It's not a permanent cure but it may work for a while until a new switch is installed

I was also wondering if a bad battery can cause a bunch of lights to come on? As the battery has proved to be a bad one. A Mercedes battery. Go figure. Lol

I just put in a new battery. The flashing arrow comes back after about 1 minute. I tried "Rowing" the shifter back and forth 10-15 times with key in ignition on, nothing helped. The trans seems to start out in 2nd gear as if W mode is on. I have pressed the W button a few time with nothing happening.... any ideas??? This is my only problem with this car for now......... I should see what codes are coming up.....

well it may be starting in 3rd then because it's sluggish as hell and the arrow is flashing. Trans level is full and the fluid looks normal for an 88k mile car.
I will check for codes....

You need to deal with the ETS. That light is pretty definitive, so get a date code on the body so you know what your dealing with. I'm guessing it's white label 1999 vintage

Ok so the era may affect the transmission arrow flashing?? Now we are getting somewhere. With the low mileage I am sure the throttle body has not been replaced with the upgraded one I will check. Does a th from an s80 fit ? It was a 2000 or 2001 s80

Thanks
Dan

Any ETM will physically fit but the programming in the ETM varies from engine type and ECM (engine control module) programming version.

Best to stick with ETM from same car and motor type (ie turbo or non turbo) however even then you have about a 1 in 3 chance of a program match.

NEver thought of that! Thanks for the tip! As the S80 had the 6 Cyl 2.9 then it may well need to be programmed for the 2.4. So I will search for a ETM off a 2.4 turbo. and the problem with the ETM would most likely impact the transmission also so it may get 2 birds with 1 stone.

Thanks guys!
