1992 Volvo 960, serious transmission issue

Post by Snowy419 »

So i recently purchased a 1992 Volvo 960, RWD, 32 valve I6, some info/issues about the car:

- 164,000 kms
- Very good condition with virtually no rust, absolutely no rot.
- The Nivomat rear shocks are shot the the rear end sags ($1000 CANADIN to replace).
- Parking break is broken.

But, the main issue is the transmission. I get the flashing arrow and the flashing WSE switch
and error code 2-3-2 for the transmission. its very sparatic(seems to only happen once the car is warmed up) but the
transmission will slip so bad it seems to "let go" of the gear and shift itelf into neutral(slipping?). Also the car
has a horrible time shifting and i usually need to put it into L then 3 then D to get it to get up to speed.

I replaced the rear ABS/Speed sensor that is located in the rear Differential ($350 and, as per error code) wich made
the car seem perfectly fixed for about two days but then when driving oin heavy snow on slippery roads the issue is back in
full force.

Does anybody have an idea of whats going on?

Thanks.

Yes, as a vehicle's complexity increases, so does the number of potential problems.

If I owned one of these vehicles, I would:

1. Disconnect the battery
2. Pull every computer related plug and clean with electrical contact cleaner and reinsert, maybe apply some dielectric grease.

WSE Switch - As someone said, "When I had my 960 the arrow started flashing. I cleared the fault codes and it did not come back. However, that does not mean it will work every time. The decision is yours."

Six cylinders + 4 valves per cylinder = 24 valves.

THIS HAPPENED TO ME YESTERDAY. So when I ran diagnostic, it gave me P0117 Coolant Temp Valve low. The arrow on my dash was flashing and after the car forgot it was already warmed up, it started racing. I replaced the ECT and cleared codes twice. Nothing came back and it runs nice again. Does the check engine come on? Does the temperature gage see odd? It's the ECT.

Also, clean all grounds, especially all engine grounds.
