2000 v70 not shifting from 2nd to 3rd

Post by volvobox »

So I bought this 2000 Volvo V70. I went across the state to pick it up after my winning bid on eBay. Checked the car out, and it had no gas in it so no test drive. I shifted transmission from D to reverse and it seemed fine. Got the car home and drove it to the gas station to get fuel and on the way I noticed already how the car wouldn't shift into 3rd. After reading online about the issue , I got some Toyota type IV transmission fluid. I drained and flushed a total of 18 qt. and the fluid looked pretty nasty. When I drive up to 21 mph and slightly let go off the throttle, the car will shift from 2nd into 3rd. If I put the car in D and press the W button below the shifter the transmission will disengage and the car begins to roll back.
I still want to go to the dealership and see if resetting the transmission will help. What is piece of equipment is necessary to reset the transmission values? could a independent do that? Or me if I get a code reader or so?

If you research the 2000-2002 models they had a disaster called the transmission bolted to the engine.

If you can return it, even at a loss, you should consider.

Try installing a new B4 servo (cheap).
A transmission adaption will not do anything in this case, waste of money now, however...
A little more info would be nice.
If this is a non turbo you have the 5 speed, the first year which is an issue in itself.
We need your MILEAGE too
What about 4th and 5th gears?
NEVER put it into winter mode (the W)

Backing off my earlier post, I don't think the 2000 has the nasty 5 speed transmission. These are bad cars to buy on eBay, though. They can easily need 5k of repairs to function unless you can turn wrenches

Actually, if it is a normally-aspirated 2000, it will have the "nasty" 5 speed. It is probably worth it to make sure that the software is updated on the odd chance that it still has the stop-neutral "feature". The B4 servo cover is cheap-- I have been meaning to put one in mine, but it has worked fine since the software update and adaptation. If the rest of the car is clean and the tranny is actually toast, Erie Vovo has transmissions for $1100 or so.

I apoligize for just coming back now.
The car has 134.000 miles, it is a 2000 with automatic transmission. 1st gear, 4th and 5th are solid. Transmission reads AN55-50SM on it.
So far I have flushed the transmission and drained it , too. and installed a external transmission oil filter with magnet in it
I took it to volvo, but they gave me a blank stare and said there is no 'update' for the software of my car.
So what can I say to educate them on how to proceed?
Also , about the B4 servo... Can I have more info? I never heard of it.

They will be happy to proceed but at 125 an hour, you will bankrupt yourself at the dealer quickly. Welcome to the world of obsolescence - no car company is interested in supporting 16 year old vehicles anymore. You need a good independent or willingness and flexibility to bring this one back to life over 3-6 months of work on weekends.

scan Mike's posts (user precopster) for info on the transmission work to see if this in your realm of comfort - if not, thats a tough car to bang your head against.

Here is some info on the B4 servo cover that JRL mentioned. There is a pdf of the installation procedure.

The dealer near me in Newmarket, Ontario, Canada did mine a couple years back. Print out the stuff from the website I posted and take it to a dealer (maybe not the one you went to before-- they sound clueless!) to show them what you need. Alternatively, you might be able to find an independent Volvo shop that has a subscription that allows them access to software.

Also, make sure that you used transmission fluid that conforms to the JWS3309 spec (some here use the cheaper Toyota version-- I have had good luck with a Mobil product).
