I'm just wondering just how many miles can you realistically drive one of these cars before a major engine or trans failure.
I have an 850 turbo with 340,000 miles and my V70 low pressure turbo just turned over 310,000. Neither of these cars has ever had a major component repair.
Just Normal wear and tear maintenance... Brakes, Shocks, Timing belts etc. Both have had to have radiators, heater cores, AC clutch re-shimming and PVC system cleaning. The V70 has also had an MAF sensor and I re-soldered the ABS board. I think I've replaced lower control arms on both for ball joint replacement, but that's about it.
Neither has ever had a starter, alternator or any engine/tranny/turbo work.
The 850 has always had Dino oil ... Castrol 20/50 at 3-4,000 mile intervals.
The V70 has always run Amsoil or Mobile one at 10,000 mile intervals.
Both have had Tranny drain and refills at around 40,000mile intervals. Dino in the 850, Mobile One in the V70
The V70 has just started to drip a drop or two of Trans fluid after a trip...it's definitely a torque converter seal leak...this will have to be addressed at some point. Neither use any oil to speak of and both run and shift fine.
I'm thinking of doing the engine pull on the V70 to replace the torque converter seal...while it's out do all the engine seals, motor mounts and all hoses and vacuum lines and drive the beast for a while longer. I bought a new v50, but prefer to drive the V70...to me the seats are better and the visibility is definitely better.
Just wondering at what point the Rod and Main bearings go to mush and the piston rings give up the ghost...or the poor little 4 speed auto explodes a sun gear and leaves me on the side of the road.
Love to hear from someone with a half million miles on one!
Thanks,
Ed

Surprised you haven't had to replace an exhaust or two by now.

My wife's GLT has 310,000 on it, we've had it since 146,000. It's had the usual wear items replaced, like the OP, but I've managed to keep it alive in the harshness of northern VT. I can't say it always fun working on Marilyn, but the odometer is the reward. We just moved to SC so my motivation is back to shoot for 500k.

Never if the oil change was done regularly and oil level is kept up.hcritz wrote: Just wondering at what point the Rod and Main bearings go to mush
Same as above.hcritz wrote: the piston rings give up the ghost.
You can always do a manual swap and upgrade to Quaife LSD like I did. I swapped the manual transmission in when the chassis had 369k.hcritz wrote: the poor little 4 speed auto explodes a sun gear and leaves me on the side of the road.

I'd like to think the 2.3 2.4 5s could run for 4-500,000 miles. neither of mine see to be showing any signs of giving up.
Hey Showell...I'm down in Mississippi...no road salt, so the exhaust look fine...I'll knock on wood here...but I've never even had an O2 sensor go.
Never thought about a manual conversion. I think when the trans lets go I'll just try and find a good used auto.

Note that the original poster is from Mississippi. Southern cars, even crappy ones, (if not near the coast) will last a long time if they are cared for. Someone mentioned exhaust typically needing multiple replacements. My 98 V70 is 18 years old and still has the original exhaust and muffler and it will probably go another 10 years. In fact, I have never had to replace another exhaust or muffler since moving to Atlanta from Chicago.
The point of my post is to consider buying your used cars in the South. You'll get a much better car for your money.
