1994 850 goes forward when in reverse

Post by dinger »

Hello,

I did some searching and wasn't able to find a situation like mine, thought I would ask if anyone might have an idea.

So here's the deal, my 1994 850 goes forward when you select Reverse. The forward gear selections work fine. With the selector in Reverse the transmission is actually going into Drive. The only fault code was A1-142 (Oil temperature sensor open circuit). The transmission shifts normal. Everything seems fine except that it now has 2 Drives and no Reverse.

Thoughts?

Could it be as simple as the linkage is out of adjustment and its going right into Drive and missing R, all together??

You can put the selector into R and it feels normal. No clunky movement or sound. And then after putting the selector into R the transmission engages drive just as if you had put it into drive. I did a quick look at the linkage and it all looks proper.

The driveway is circular so it's not as annoying as it could be.

Many years ago I had a problem with a 93 Auto 850 we bought that had had an engine change. I had problems initially with transmission selections, and it was down to the cable adjustment. The seller had the transmission adjusted, but I don't know what was done. Having said that, I am not sure that that is the case in your car, as unless you have some work done on the car recently, I'm not sure what would cause the issue to suddenly occur, unless something broke or came loose.

I can't recall if the code reader in the early 850's read transmission codes. Maybe someone with one or that has the handbooks may be able to advise on that.

It may require a specialist transmission person or dealer to advise.

One other thought, when did you last have the transmission oil changed or serviced?

Neil,

I serviced the trans oil 8 months ago. No indication of leakage, no towing, no heavy loads, light on the throttle and nothing to indicate an impending problem. I am going to check the fluid just to rule out something simple. Thanks

When my car was doing that, the first second or two it would reverse, then 1st would kick in and overpower (torque) reverse.
