Did you run a compression test while the plugs were out?

I don't have the equipment to test the compression so I would have to pick that up coming Friday.

I'll swap out the ECT since there is a code for it. If the ECT is bad, should the engine start while flooring the accelerator? I have two batteries which I'm swapping between my current daily driver a VW Vento and the Volvo, so I have one with juice at all times. At least until I have the Volvo in a state where it will start every time I want it to. I'm also going to pick up a pair of jumper cables by Friday, so power will not be an issue by then.

I prefer OE parts but would this work on my car?

9186486 - üro parts brand off rockauto.com that's where I get 90% of my parts, the rest are typically available at local part store. Cheap OEM good quality and ship pretty quick too. If you aren't familiar with üro parts they are really good OEM replacement part brand. I've never had any issue with any of their parts. IPD is also pretty good but can be a bit pricey. If the ECT doesn't fix the issue try testing fuel pressure, does the vehicle start at all? If so does it hesitate under acceleration? (Park or drive)

U we've had trouble with off brand ECT parts here, I would recommend OEM. If it won't catch on ether, it is really flooded.

I have had the car running, but only bought it 2 weeks ago. Since then I drove it four times, around 100 miles total. When I bought it, it had not been running for 4-5 months. All four trips it started at the first turn of the key with no indication of any problems at all apart from the ABS not working and service light being on.

It's a stick version and I haven't really noticed if it hesitated in any gears on the trips I did manage to get in it. If it has, I might have shrugged it off thinking it would improve since the car have been left standing outside for up to 5 months without running. I know it's been 5 months as I got the date from the tax office of when the license plates were taken off the car.

As I live in Denmark (Northern Europe), I'll probably not buy any parts from the States, shipping cost plus import taxes would quickly eat any savings made on buying overseas as well as the shipping time would be rather long.

Will removing the plugs and leaving them out vent out the excess gas or do I need to do something else?

I remember reading on this site that the coolant temperature sensor can cause a no start.
Be sure you have spark, or all your work is for nothing.

Cranking a couple cranks with the pump relay pulled out will do the trick.

Seeing as this is about commando swap & hope repair, we should list all the parts that we guess could be wrong, then the OP can order them at the same to save on shipping. If that still doesn't get the car running, we'll start a NEW list, over and over until it's running?

Ugh, that sounds like a lot of money coming out of my pockets if we go along with that strategy RussB.

I will replace the spark plugs since I've no idea when they were replaced last, going to go with OE http://spare-parts.dk/media/154312/271603.jpg (not trying to start another spark plug discussion, just saying that is what I'll be doing

)

I'll have a closer look at the ECT and the wiring for it. I have to do that anyway to see what type I need as I've read you can get one with or without wires attached to it. Hopefully it's just a lose/broken connection, as buying an OE version of the ECT will cost 1/4 of the price I paid for the car itself.

I plan to change oil, oil and air filter and thermostat + coolant in the very near future, but not before I get the car approved (which includes emissions test).
