Hi everyone. First time posting, I think i may have a fuel pump issue.
Symptoms:
  • -car will start and idle for 1 - 2 seconds stutter and shut off.
-It will not start unless I turn the ignition key from off to on about 3 - 4 times, then on the next try it will start idle for 1 -2 seconds then stutter and shut off.
What i have done so far:
  • -I have check the fuel pump relay and i do hear it clicking when turning the ignition key.
-I hear the fuel pump when i turn the ignition key.
-I have changed the fuel filter with a new one but no change. (I was hoping it was a clogged filter)
-when i press the pressure release valve on the end of the fuel rail when the system is primed a couple of times, gas dribbles out it does not spray out.
My question is should gas be spraying out with some force when i press the valve on the end of the fuel rail instead of dribbling out?. i think it should but I'm not sure, and any other help you guys can give would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, you have it right about the pressure.

Assuming this is a 99 S70?

I agree it sounds like a bad fuel pump (probably the check valve in the pump), or possibly a bad fuel pump relay, or (unlikely) a leak in the fuel line somewhere.

I would next test the relay by jumpering it, just to be sure it is not the relay.

It is possible to just swap in a new check valve, like if you have an old, dead fuel pump lying around.

It should spray out with force and I highly recommend safety glasses when you mess with the Schrader valve. I'm not a "Sammy Safety" kind of guy but gasoline in your eyes is quite painful.

Were I in your situation I would start by removing the fuel pump relay (103) and then install a piece of wire between the socket positions associated with pins 15 and 87 on the relay. See if the car will start and run then. If it does just replace or repair the relay and motor on. There are some fuel pump relay repair threads in the repair database if you know how to solder.

If it doesn't start and run and you don't have good fuel pressure then the pump itself has issues and it will need to be changed. In most cases you can get by with just changing the pump cartridge and on a FWD car it is fairly easy to change through the access cover behind the rear seat. If your car is an all wheel drive the job gets much nastier and you either need to drop out the entire rear running gear and the gas tank to replace it or you can cut a hole in the floorboard.

1+ on the relay jump of terminals #15 and #87.

I posted info on measuring the fuel pump resistance (in Ohms) in forum. It should be within spec, if not it is shorted out.

Hi guys thanks for the responses.
So i jumped the terminals and still got the same problem so I got a new fuel pump, I'm having a really hard time getting the fuel line off the top of the fuel pump, i got one off just one more to go.
Anyone have any tips for getting these off that can help save my fingertips?

I give them a generous spray with PB blaster and let it soak in. The connectors tend to get corroded with road salt and such and penetrating oil can loosen them up. I also modified a panel clip remover that will slide in around the fuel line to give a little bit better leverage but I mainly use that for the AWD pumps.

I use an open-end wrench, a large one fits under the connector edges just right. But I don't remember what size, maybe 17 mm or ... ?

Replace the fuel filter and see if that fixes it. This is the first thing I expect to be the issue when a car starts runs then dies, especially the way you mentioned.

Never mind, just reread your post. Are there any codes especially for crank sensor?
And have you checked fuel pressure when it's doing that? Could possibly be the fuel pressure regulator.

Getting the lines off from what i can yell they are the kind with metal spikes that set when pushed on. Push down and squeeze the release then pull up to get it off. As said before a wrench can help. The fun part is unscrewing the plastic nut without breaking it.

There's no fuel pressure regulator on the 1999+ ME7 cars although that might be different in cars that went into the port of Spain.... :D
