Volvo 850 - ABS Light On

Post by jjs70pdx »

I have a '94 Volvo 850 wagon. The ABS light comes on within 10 minutes of driving it, and it will stay on until I shut it off and restart it. After the restart it does not come on again (in the same day). No other symptoms besides the light coming on each time I first drive the car from a cold start. Wanting to find out if I should use the on board OBD1 to pull codes, or if this issue points to anything else being wrong?

Pull the codes from the dtc box and go from there.

Hi JJ from PDX,

If it's a 94 its extremely likely to be caused by thise rear abs sensors causing erratic readings for the module. It's unlikely to be caused by the 'modern' abs module after 95. go check those rear sensors with obd1, clear all codes and recheck. Trouble also cause those front abs rings.

Either way, repair is feasable and easy!

Pull the codes first, then reset them. Sometimes simply resetting the codes fixes is enough. If the light comes back on the next time you drive, you know the problem stems beyond a mere "trip" of the code. Here's a comprehensive guide on how to read codes: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/read-codes-volvo-850

Good luck!
