Newbie to Volvo and to Forum with 540,000 km

Post by 2001XC70 »

Hello fellows Guys and ladies,
I am buying a XC 70 2001 with 540,000 km that's right 1/2 million km not 54,000 km. But the CEL is on and gave me 2 codes P0234 engine overboost condition and P0455 evaporative emission leak detected.
I am new to volvo never had one, so far I know this is not a turbo one (I think). The car is in mint condition, no rust. I heard long time about volvo cars will go a lot of KM but never seen it with my own eyes. Now my question is how I can get that cel go away since here in Canada the new law doesn't allow a car pass emmission when this light is on. How much money will cost me to fix it? I have until tomorrow to give an answer to the guy, please help I rrally wants to buy it but need to know if I can certify it first.
Thanks

Ivan

It sounds like it definitely has a turbo since P0234 is a Turbocharger (TC) control valve overboost condition and could be caused by a bad BCV (Boost Control Valve) or a bad Wastegate or possibly a few other things. It could be anywhere in the neighborhood of $75 - $325 to fix depending on what it really is. The P0455 code represents an Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (gross leak) in connection with your Fuel Tank System. It could be a problem with the Purge Valve, or the charcoal canister, or the line that leads to the canister. Check out this other thread on the code to maybe get some insight: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... hp?t=27538

If it hit has the 5 speed automatic transmission it must work FLAWLESSLY. The 2000-2002 5 speeds were problematic on these cars.

The other two codes are worthy of taking a chance on for a good deal - 1000-2000 CAD car

Well guys I got her, now I will give her some love, a good overhaul starting with the inside, clean the leather seat, she needs tires, it has 16" rims, It needs a lower tail left light (broken) no big deal and a battery. Then to start troubbleshooting the 2 codes to do the emission.
Anybody can lead me to a junker or web site where I can get used parts?

It should be in the trunk under the rear floor panel. Open the tailgate, and there is a hidden storage panel that lifts up. Not sure on the 01 version, but our 06 has a plastic tray with 2 tabs (one each side) that have to be rotated CCW and then lift out the tray. The battery is near the rear bunper on the LHS.

Good luck with your project!

There is a European used parts specialist in Toronto I believe. Look on Kijiji, as I have seen them advertise there. Also, south of the border there is Erie VoVo. They advertise on MVS (I think) and also on Ebay.com
