1998 V70 GLT Timing Belt Questions

Post by bmdubya1198 »

I've got a few questions about replacing my timing belt and components...
What I know is that engines before 1266127 have a different setup from 1266128 and on. I've been looking on iPd and FCP Euro for kits, and FCP had mentioned one kit that was for 1266128 and on, but for direct injected cars. I don't think my car is direct injected.
Since my timing belt cover is from another car, I can't get the serial number from there. According to the stamp on the back of my engine, the serial number is 1427137. My car is a 1998 V70 GLT, with the B5245T. The stamp shows B5254, but there was still dirt on the end, so I assume there's a "T" there.

So, what I'd like to know is what tensioner should I go with, and what parts do I need? From what I know, I need the following:
Timing Belt (I'm going with Continental for sure, just would like to know the specific part number, if anyone knows)
Tensioner- Hydraulic or mechanical, automatic or not, need clarification here... if I'm looking at this information correctly, my car needs part number 8670484, which I believe is the mechanical tensioner.
Idler/Roller, part no. 8630590
Water pump and gasket, mine seems to have a very small leak. Those parts shouldn't be an issue to find. I say that now, at least...
...That's all I need, right?

It seems the part I'm most confused about is the direct injection detail. Is my engine direct injected? I have my car's original '98 engine, with the distributor cap & rotor rather than the newer coil-over-plug ignition. Am I just looking too far into this?

Don't worry about "direct injection" (it's not). Just pull the timing belt cover and look at the tensioner. If it's hydraulic or mechanical. It took you longer to leave this post than it would be to pull the cover and look at it.

Belt, tensioner roller, idler roller, Volvo or Aisin water pump (gasket and bolts).

You're probably right... just got a bit confused by reading that direct injection stuff. Thanks!

That would have been easier. I just wasn't sure, I haven't ventured into the timing yet on one of these cars :)

Make sure you buy your parts from a MVS Sponsor! (You can save a few bucks here and there by buying a Continental belt vs a Volvo belt, or a Hepu water pump vs. the Aisin, or INA Tensioners/Pulley vs. Volvo. You'll see as you start to look through everything!)

Also, be careful with that lower timing belt cover, pretty easy to break!

Let us know how it goes!

If you have a hydraulic tensioner system, your Blue Box parts list for the 1998 GLT motor to replace all components is:

9146693 Timing Belt Hydraulic Damper
30758260 Timing Belt Kit (timing belt, idler roller, tensioner roller, plastic spacer, sticker)
30751700 Water Pump Kit (water pump, gasket, bolts)
31338284 Volvo Coolant

Confirmed correct as I just did this job on my car.

Thanks, guys! I was going to ask about brands, and it seems that was all laid out for me. I know I've seen Robert say several times to go with Aisin for the pump. I know for sure I'm going with Continental for the belt, no sense in paying for a Volvo belt when it's the same thing.
I almost always buy from MVS sponsors, usually FCP Euro! Their service is great, as are their prices!
I'll take a look at my car today before I go on asking about the mechanical tensioner. After some reading around, I'm really hoping for the hydraulic...
