Buying 2001 V70

Post by anfranco60 »

I've been looking for a car for my Daughter. Her 95' 850 just seized after she hit a boulder w/ the oil filter and keep on driving, who knew. . . .
I got my eye on a few 2001 V70T's and am leary of it being 1st production year for Gen 2 and all the tranny probs I've read about.
The cars I'm looking at are very clean w/ low miles and major repairs done such as Timing belts & Struts. Mileages are @ 135k -150k and were talking $4000.00 -$4500.00 (some are Dealers and I'm feeling I can get in @ 3500.00)
I'm not afraid of these as they are just machine w/ components that I've been fixing for 25 years (have owned 544, 124, 4-240's & 4-850's)
Please ease my mind and smack me with the truth my fellow Brethren. . . . merci
Anfranco

Daily driver?? How many miles will she put on it and will it be in the famous DC traffic?

If the transmission is perfectly smooth and shifts well, thats a good price to get into a really nice car. The pre 2000 (P80 cars) are cheaper but you/daughter has to be able to fix them yourself or else you get eaten alive.

With prices on 2004's not far off I would skip a 2001 in a heartbeat.

Sounds like yo could fix any troubles that came up but in long run the time/money proposition is won by spending a touch more on an 04. IMHO

If you are buying a FWD V70, then 2004 or newer is a wiser choice as the guys have said. They are not that much more and are sturdier.

After an extensive search for 2004's (there just where non around) this 01' T5 just felt OK. Got the 'Carfax' and discovered it was a California car that moved to Scottsdale coming to Saint Louis in 06'. This 01' had been regularly maintained @ Dealers and had a New Transmission installed 9/2010 @73,000 mi. There have been numerous Software upgrades (spec getting around the Cali emissions & Tranny upgrades) and a shit load of work done including new Timing belt & Radiator in 14' and Front Struts just this year.
Drives like a Dream and shits as smooth as a Baby's Butt. Turbo spools up quick and this thing is @ Triple digits B4 you know it.
Pulled the trigger and got it for $3600.00. My gut had been telling me this was an OK car and quite frankly I was never afraid of it.
It's color is 'Sage' w/ Tan interior and is a very sexy Wagon. . . .
Thanks for the advise Guys ~ Volvo 4Ever ~

I don't know what year Volvo changed front seats in P2, but wife's 02 has way better seats than my 05.

Also with new transmission it should be a nice car. Just make sure you install external ATF cooler (any appropriate size Hayden OC works) and Magnefine filter.

Oddly enough, that's actually what a Baby's Butt does too... :P

Just realize that

That green color is awesome and I believe very rare, great buy. Keep replacing the transmission fluid with the right one every 20k miles or so for these 2001-2002 transmissions were sensitive.
