Newbie to site - Problems with 01 S80 T6 ETM codes

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Newbie to site - Problems with 01 S80 T6 ETM codes

Post by Bash350 »

Hey, I am new to this site and this is my first ever Volvo. Super nice 2001 S80 T6 with 327,000kms. It appears to have been well looked after but after owning it three days it broke down.

Basically it stalled and struggled to restart. I eventually got it started but wouldn't rev over 2000rpm (I am guessing limp mode). It also was hunting up and down at idle quite significantly and wouldn't idle when in drive.

After letting it stand for 10 minutes it started and drove but warning message said to check engine system. After getting it scanned they found the following codes:

2810 front O2 sensor - Bank 1 heating (this was on before it broke down)
902A communication with throttle unit
912A comm' with ECM
903F throttle position
959/9180 accelerator pedal position
903C reconfiguration emission system
904D ETS warning lamp
271A long-term fuel trim Bank 2

The previous owner had just had the ETM replaced barely a month prior to me buying it.

After driving another four days it happened again but had to leave it all afternoon before it started again. Yet it started and drove fine. I am now afraid to drive it again in case it leaves me stranded somewhere.

Someone suggested it might need reprogramming - is this possible?

Any help would be much appreciated I would like to keep the car but not sure I want to now.

What are you testing the car with - a Vida/Dice? One of the members here can remote in using your Vida Dice, do a diagnostic bitsum check on the firmware file of the ETM and reprogram it if required. Otherwise it DOES look like you need another ETM.

You say the previous owner had the ETM replaced, but was that with a new Volvo unit, or a used one? AFAIK they need to be programmed to the vehicle. Not sure what symptoms a faulty O2 sensor would cause, but shouldn't that be replcaed?

It is going in this week. ETM was genuine Volvo part. He is going to check it and see what is going on. Thanks
