Yeah - Running fine and thought about selling but still dont have 10k for a new-er car. I mean i do but i dont want to break open the piggy bank either right. And I dont want to just swap my old car for another old car. At least i know what I have at this point. If i see something compelling I may though.

Regarding the axle/bearing - transmission mechanic said the bearing was completely shot and axle as bad as he has ever seen. He said he thought the transmission was in great shape actually. The bearing was on the ground and I snapped a pic b/c my colleague at work was asking me what a bearing was. Fwiw - A volvo dealer tech just hearing the description of the problem said it was most likely a bad transmission or it could be really bad drive shaft.

The only thing i can think of right now about it is that axle joint besides transmission was actually failed and was spinning freely not transfering the power to the wheels.

There is a cv joint and axle joint. When either of them fails completelly there would be not power transfer to wheels, except that cv joint would produce a clicking sound before it fails.

Great news that "R" will stay and that problem is solved for cheap. ;)

Grrrrr. Same.Exact.Problem.

Ok it has been maybe 50 to 100 miles max since the axle was fixed. The car was driving fine and bam same issue yesterday morning when I was heading to work. Leaving the driveway I could feel it. I did notice what appeared to be white-grease on the driveway where it had been parked.

I headed over to the mechanic this morning. He drove it again and said still believes transmission is fine as it shifts normally. Specifically the issue is from a start the engine is revs and you can clearly feel/hear something spinning but the wheels are not getting power and the car moves forward slowly until it picks up some speed and then gets going better. It is somewhat similar to starting in winter mode in terms of acceleration but add in the slipping/spinning sound and feel. At speed you dont really feel it but I have not put it under much load either. Angle gear?

Sorry to hear that.Unfortunatelly....i wasn't convinced from a start that axle bearing you replaced was a problem at first place.
It could make a loud grinding like bearings do,but not transmission slipping.

Assuming you photo was of the carrier bearing on the passenger side axle, misha is correct--how could it interfere with power to the wheel unless it completely seized up, but as he says, it would do some loud growling first. Intermittent slipping in first gear sure sounds like trans issue.

I spoke with the mechanic that changed it out the axle. He put in a new axle and it is driving fine atm. He said when he the put the car on the lift, the bearing which is supposed to be in the middle of the shaft was no longer connected and had slid 1-2 inches toward the center of the car. This was the exact same issue that caused the problem initially. He said he never had seen this occur on a volvo and definitely not twice in 50 miles. His thought was either a bad part or maybe something in the suspension set-up was pulling the axle out. It is a transmission/general shop.

Just spoke at length with a volvo indy shop and they said basically he said he has no idea how or why a bearing set-up would fail so quickly. It is an aftermarket part (EGF or something like that I can check if anyone cares) and he said though aftermarket that was a fine part maker. He did not have any immediate or obvious suggestion to check.

Is there anything that could cause this twice. Obviously the first one was a old part so maybe for whatever reason that failed and the bearings were definitely not in good shape. But just dumb luck with a bad part? Or can the transmission side be pushing the axle out? Or the wheel/suspension pulling it out? Mind you, i didnt hit a huge pot hole, no accident, nothing obvious that would cause some kind of mis-alignment of parts. Car drives straight. FWIW the transmission does seem fine otherwise. Current plan is basically to drive it and let's see what happens.

As for a pic -

The bearing that failed is the one with the red seal on it right in the middle of the axle. It is just about dead center in the total length of the axle.

Red seal on pictured axle is the carrier bearing. I don't know how possible to make it fail unless something is radically wrong with the suspension. The bearing mount cap only has a flange on one side, but I don't see how it could be put on backwards because the bolts are offset differently at top and bottom. Aftermarket axles are sometimes rubbish.

Maybe his axles are actual problem. Can you verify are they aftermarket or oem?

It was an aftermarket part. Manufacturer is FEQ - first equipment quality. And quick search on the site:

https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... =1&t=12990 "Be careful buying FEQ axles"

F.... Though the independent volvo shop said he would have used the manufacturer and that he has had success with them. FEQ gets pretty bad reviews on amazon etc. We will see this one last more than 50 miles.
