Just serviced PCV, now could use troubleshooting help

Post by DaveV70T5 »

Hi all,

I'm hoping someone can give me some guidance so I can get back to driving rather than riding public transportation.

I have a high mileage V70 T5 (185,000 miles) that I'm trying to keep running. It was blowing lots of smoke so I thought a PCV service was in order. I've completed the service, but the car isn't running right. It sounds like vacuum leak to me, but also has what I describe as a low growl that sounds like one of the intake pipes is loose somewhere.

A couple questions:

Is the PCV system directly tied into the intake vacuum system such that if there is a leak in the new parts I installed (thanks FCP!) it would cause rough idle, whistling and backfiring?

I cleaned the ETM throat with brake cleaner. Is that a total noob mistake that fried it?

I've uploaded a 26 second YouTube video where you can hear the whistling and the growl. It's called: "V70 T5 Vacuum leak 2001" Here's the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Umt1H23pnMQ

I know remote diagnosis is difficult, but I'd appreciate any help if you have a couple minutes to check out the video.

Thanks in advance!
Dave

Yep, PCV attaches to vacuum at the manifold with a banjo nut, at the breather box, and down near the PTC nipple (not a valve)

Any leaks in this will whistle and cause poor running. I think your 2001 is the same as my 1999?

The PCV job is done (I think), turns out my air leak was due to improper installation of the ETM. Didn't notice I had it on 180 degrees off and there was a gap between the ETM and the manifold. I guess that'll make it run poorly.... :D

So now it runs smoothly, has plenty of power, but is pouring blue smoke out the exhaust pipe under acceleration. A huge amount of blue smoke. Also is pumping out a fair bit of smoke at idle.

Any thoughts on where I should look next? I'd guess the turbo isn't seized as it has plenty of power, can the turbo cause a huge amount of smoking even if it's not seized?

When I did the PCV job, I did not clean the PTC nipple because I don't know where it is on the engine. Could this be the culprit?

Any other thoughts on how I could be combusting huge amounts of oil?

Thanks much!
Dave
