Thanks Markjcm, Abscate, Erik11, BenPinapple, TryingBe and Kahl. I'll try and clean out that pipe carefully.

Markjcm you did yours yesterday? Did you replace that long winding $220 pipe? It's Volvo part #9470330 and I've heard it can be brittle and can be hard to clean out.

What tool/brush has anyone found useful for cleaning out this pipe? I'm thinking of pushing a wire in and then tying a cloth soaked in solvent? Or maybe one of those plastic zip-it tools from Home Depot used for sink drains? Or maybe just compressed air?

The last one I did was on my Nephew's 2000 V70XC. His sump was clogged with a wonderful asphalt hard sludge. I took a hose and clamped it to the port and poured in Sea Foam overnight to loosen debris. I then took compressed air and blew out the clog. Further cleaned out the sump with a thick tie wrap. I was then able to blow bubble into the oil pan.

Oil change immediately Kahl?

My previous question was thinking more about the pipes...

Yes, oil change immediately.

If the bottom port into the oil pan is clogged, the key is to make sure the crap is cleaned out "around the corner" as the channel heads into the oil pan, not just the part you can see easily from the outside. You should be able to blow air through it easily.

To clean out the pipe I think I would start with a tub of very hot water and degreaser, immerse and soak the whole thing. I agree you will want some kind of brush or chaser tool, your ideas sound good to me. :D

That hose 9470330 can be bought for $153.00 from Volvo Parts Leslie. I have just replaced them because the coolant flows thru part of the hose from the intake manifold to the rear of the block.

And to further clarify. You don't need to replace that whole expensive pipe going around the block unless it's clogged in a place you can't reach. The part number from XC90 T6 you suggested comes into play only if you break it close to the banjo bolt.

I always drop the left 10mm bolt on the PCV canister at least 3 times before I get it in  Then I put some Blue Tack or grease on the socket to keep the bolt from falling. Can't imagine doing this job with a blindfold

I pre-crimp or tighten the hose clamps before putting the canister back in just to save my back.

Precopster what you mention is the exact thing that I'm wondering about. I've never touched any of these PCV pipes and if I break one, I'll need to have the solution at hand. How does one splice in a repair piece like that one from the XC90? How would you join another piece to the rest of the pipe? Is this plastic pipe or metal?

And is that old trap canister *usually* clean-able? Does it get replaced because it's only a $40 part and it's hard to get to? Does it actually get worn or stressed bolted to the block?

thanks

Canister is the last thing I would clean unless you split the thing and clean it out then reweld it with glue. All that good work cleaning out the block ports can go to waste if some crud you miss from the canister gets pushed back through.

That S80T6 or XC90T6 part is just a banjo fitting with a length of moulded plastic tubing. Just be gentle as possible when flexing the manifold to reach the banjo bolt; best to remove the ETM and pipe so you have lots of elbow room.
