What Will Cause No Warning Lights in Position 2?

Hello All! new member here. I picked up a '95 Volvo T5-r that has sat for the last 6 months with a dead battery. I pulled fuel pump, drained tank, installed a running pump, added fresh fuel and fuel treatment. Cleaned ground under battery and block grounds and will look for other grounds around oil pressure sender today. Yesterday, I was able to get dash lights by bridging dimmer pins but still no warning lights? What conditions or failed components will create this situation? Also, is there a procedure when installing a new battery in terms of resetting ECU, etc? Big thanks!

No procedure on ECU reset, it should power up just fine.

The electrical portion of the ignition switch is a common failure item, and often results in no or just a few warning lights, plus assorted other electrical symptoms. Try rotating the key back and forth ever so slightly to see if there is a position where things work.

thank you! Do you know the procedure for resetting ECU, etc. when installing a fresh battery? Could failing ignition switch cause a no volt to fuel pump situation?

The act of changing the battery resets the ECU all by itself. If the instrument cluster warning lights are not coming on then chances are that the fuel pump isn't priming either. A bad B+ cable to the fuse box can also cause the problem you describe but it will usually take out the dash lights and things like the radio as well. If the car had been parked for an extended period of time the contacts on the ECU and the TCU can corrode but they usually don't. You can use contact cleaner to clean the edge connector but to be super safe remove a battery terminal first. Assuming that the car didn't flood the contacts aren't usually an issue but the electrical portion of the ignition switch is a very common problem. It is cheap and easy to fix in Volvo terms.

Thanks Lee! Off to pluck a ignition switch from the picnpull. I will most likely buy a new one once I get this car running. I am guessing that ignition switch common for 95,96,97? Thanks again for helping out!

850s from 94-97 all have the same electrical portion of the ignition switch.

Be careful when you replace the ignition switch that you pry the connector off from the very bottom and don't just yank the cap off The cap is what holds the wires in place and they all come out of the sockets when the cap is removed. More than one person has accidentally pulled off the cap.

Interesting. On my T5R the oil pressure light sometimes won't come on along with gauges that intermittently don't work. Are the 95's more susceptible to instrument cluster issues for some reason?

Not in my experience, gauges and lights always come on OK in my T5R. But I only have one 95.

Make sure the wires that connect to the positive wire at the battery are connected and in good shape. There are 3 or 4 of them.
