98 V70 NA Synthetic oil change interval

I sell a small range of Volvo parts here on fleabay and have sold about 15 Manns for 98s then I ran into a customer who insisted I keep bringing in K & N filters (PS-2004) as he claimed he had data that concluded the filter material was superior to all others. Haven't seen that data as he didn't share it with me.......more usless drivel to an overanalysed topic; absolutely!!

Oil intervals and brand choices is a uniquely subjective topic, you're going to get tangents. You want the objective truth? Take an oil sample and send it to the lovely folks at http://www.blackstone-labs.com/free-test-kits.php and they'll give you a concise answer without going on tangents and ruining your day.

Not sure why you're using conventional oil in the first place, OEM is full-synthetic 5w-30 (I think that's the weight). I talked to a guy once who was running conventional because it theoretically cleans the internals less, and was hoping using a "dirtier" oil would plug a rear main seal leak.

Wrong

Oil viscosity depends on ambient temperature where the car will be used.

If you live in very hot climate you can use 20w-50 oil all year round.

It doesn't matter if it's mineral or synthetic,that's individual choice.
Fully synth oil is RECOMMENDED to use in turbo engines.N/a can use both.

Ahh, you'r right. I was mixing it up with my wife's explorer, which has 5w-30 printed on the oil fill cap.

Didn't realize conventional versus synthetic is choice. My v70's manual says synthetic, so I've never given conventional a thought.

Since you guys are "quoting" the 1998 S/V70 owner's manual and coming up with different things, you may want to read it one more time

The manual says:
- to use any oil that meets specifications (i.e., synthetic or mineral)
- that under extreme operating conditions synthetic is recommended
- nothing about different oils for turbo vs. NA.
- Volvo never recommended 20w-50! That is way too heavy, especially for a turbo car.
- The manual recommends 15w-40 "should only be used under" the most extreme and hottest ambient temperature conditions. Nothing heavier.

For turbo engines I currently use Rotella T6 synthetic, 5w-40.

You are using oil for diesel engine in your car.
Is that recommended from Volvo?
I don't think so.

I used 20w-50 and 15w-50 in summer in my car without any problems.
20W-50 was mineral and 15w-50 was semi-synth from Mobil & Total.

It is guaranteed that not everyone will agree on what oil to use, I've owned up to and moved on from that.

I never said that Volvo recommended 20w-50.

I said that it can be used in very hot climate area without problems.

There are also a lot of different viscosities that can be used but they are not officially recommended by Volvo and those are Castrol RS 10w-60 or Mobil1 5w-50 or 15w-50.

They are especially suitable for high rev engines like T5 or T5R.

Anyway,when i said that 20w-50 can be used you said that it's not recommended.
I just asked is it recommended to use oil for diesel engines?

Neither of them are recommended,but both can be used without problems.Diesel oils have just a little more detergents than actual oil for petrol engines and have standards for both engines,diesel & petrol ones.They are just more suitable for diesels.

Oil for petrol engines can also be used in diesel engines,they also have a standard for diesels.They will have a little less detergents than required but will not hurt the engine in any way.

misha I misinterpreted what you were trying to say about oil recommendations in the owner's manual, my mistake, sorry about that.

It was this one, that is definitely not in the owner's manual, that got me started:

Greetings. No matter what car, truck or suv I have owned, I do not go over 5000 miles between changes. Oil brand wasn't a major concern in my early years. Keeping oil clean was. Now I can buy better brands or quality. Changing oil to me is like washing my hands. Doing it three times a day is better ounce with a week.
