Hey everyone- long time no see! I'm sort of back into Volvo things again so will probably be here more often. We just bought an '07 S40 and an '07 V70 (still have the S70 and '04 V70). My question is regarding a possible burnt intake valve (the reason for the V70 purchase). My son was on his way home from about an hour out of town (94 850 non-turbo with 250K miles- repaired over and over again- in fact, at this point it has a salvage title) on the interstate and suddenly the car stopped accelerating (in fact, pushing the gas pedal slowed the car). He stopped and called me. I told him to check under the hood and measure his oil level. When he opened the hood oil was everywhere and he said the engine was smoking. Oil was not on the dip stick either. He got to the next exit, driving it slowly, bought oil and filled it up. I asked him if he wanted me to come and get him or have the car towed but he said he would try to struggle home. 3 hours later, he limped into the driveway. The next day I took the car to the mechanic. No compression on cylinder #5. Without further testing, he suspects that an intake valve was burnt and oil spilled out of that valve. Is that possible? Any other suspects? No broken oil lines. Anyway, this car is trash at this point. We'll be pulling anything of value off of it and it will most likely go to the pull-a-part.

Alas, bummer, sorry to hear even if it was a beater.
That's a weird one, essentially every burnt valve you read about is on the exhaust side. When you said oil everywhere I was thinking some kind of crankcase issue that blew it out the oil cap, cam seals and etc. I'm not really sure how the burnt valve translates to throwing oil everywhere. Into the intake yes, but why all over the engine (led to a high crankcase pressure episode?). But if it is zero compression, there is little argument the engine is toast, a piston or valve issue.
If you ever find out that it is in fact a valve, please add it to the pinned "burnt valve" thread.

Welcome back, MIJ. I remember your many contributions from the old days (we joined only three months apart). I also took a hiatus from MVS but aging cars brought me back. Thanks for adding your '98 S70 experience to the burnt valve thread.
