Can I replace a 97 B5254S w/o air pump with a 96 w/ air pump?

Yes.

Just use all the accessories that are already on the 97, i.e. no air pump, keep the same intake manifold etc and fuel pressure regulator, just swap in the engine. The engines are exactly the same, ignore the bolt-ons (which are almost exactly the same, except for emissions).

Everything will bolt on.

That's good to know. The bottom end on mine is trashed. I found a 96 with 89K miles for a good price. I just wasn't sure if the air pump difference was going to be an issue.

I may keep the original engine and rebuild it, depending on parts costs. I can do the machine work myself.

I'd imagine a set of pistons is expensive. And I managed to break a head bolt off in the block.
