1998 V70-XC Evap leak

Hey all,
My Volvo is giving me a P0455 so after a bit of searching I sealed the end of the tube that goes to the maf sensor and made a diy smoke tester. I hooked up my air compressor (regulated to about 2 psi) to a jar with a smoking rag and then to the first little connector near the air filter. It worked really well and I found a lot of smoke coming out from behind the engine.

The smoke is coming from just below the hose clamp that's circled in red. The rubber tube goes over the right side of the engine and connects to what looks like the bottom of the radiator.

Before I disconnect it and attempt to fix the leak I would love some input if anybody has had this problem before.

LOL, That is the output from the turbo going to the intercooler. That hose can develop a split/hold that will cost you a major boost leak. A hole the size of a straw opening is about a 7 lb leak. That should sucker there cost about $80 at Volvo. I take them from the junk yard all the time.

PS: Does not cause the P0455 code.

When I had the P0455 EVAP code, it took me a while to figure it all out, because I had to kinda-sorta figure out what EVAP system was and what these EVAP hoses did (in order to spring a leak in the EVAP system in order to cause the code for "gross leak / no flow").

Thanks to everyone here on the forums, and with some exploring under the car it turned out to be a split / cracked hose commonly called the J-hose.

Under the car a visual inspection at first the hose appeared ok, but another trip down there and getting inches from it I could feel the underside of it and felt the large split. After hose replacement, the code went away and never came back. I replaced the "J" hose, and another EVAP hose, a straight hose near it that ran back towards the gas tank. (in my mind I called it an "L" hose due to the shape) Im new-ish to volvos and DIY repair and I was able to tackle it , only really hard part was taking your time and getting under car while its (very!) safely supported because you'll need to move around down there to inspect it, also when going 'back in' to do the repair. My EVAP hoses were under car on the passenger side next to the fuel filter and is 98 S70 T5, so i'm guessing it is similar to yours.

This 'J' hose was discussed here on MVS as being a common one to trip that code, and it turned out to be what was going on with mine. Hope this helps & Good luck!

I have a 98 V70 AWD, and the charcoal canister is on the driver's side, right behind the foglight under the bumper (foglight wiring harness clips to the charcoal canister on V70s not equipped with foglights).

There are a couple spots the canister was put in various models, a '00 V70 XC had it located in the location described by S7turbo.

Might be a good idea to post the video and start a separate thread, as smoke coming out of your turbo outlet is not a good thing, and also unrelated to the P0455.
