Critical decision coming on whether to repair or junk my S70, could use someone very knowledgeable/experienced to discuss my options. My mechanical friends don't know Volvo. Thanks. Jeff

Guys, sorry, I have note been on the website for awhile....too depressed with the volvo. Matty Moo, I'm in Sylvania, 35 min away from you. Need some help, can we talk on the phone? The car is at Volvo of Perrysburg right now. I finally gave in and had them pull codes etc. I don't really like what I got from them. For background, i posted this week on volvo forum and it has a lot of detail about whats happening. i'll PM you my cell phone number. Again Thanks so much for this. I feel all alone, including Volvo and the local indie...

Its fine to talk to locals but the whole power of MVS is the collective knowledge - cut and paste your saga and let the Borg have at it....

Many of us don't bother with other Volvo Fora - because, well, the best one is here...

Agreed. I would argue one of the best car forums period.

I'm sure I did before - but ok since you asked!

'99 S70, AWD, Turbo

Transmission issues - won't go into gear after warm. Goes into all gears 100% of the time dead cold. Upon warming I can hear a whine and thats when it won't shift anymore, flashing arrow, CEL. There is also one other thing that I notice each time (because if I clear the code and let it sit awhile, I can repeat this entire thing, including getting it to go into gear again until warm) The other thing I notice is that once the arrow starts to flash and the CEL comes on, the idle speed reduces by about 200 rpm and it idles a little rougher.

Anyway, I pull code P0139. Nothing else except P1618 sometimes (Glow plug/heater etc etc, which is either a ghost code or I read also that it points back at the PNP) Pulled the PNP, cleaned it up real good, its the OE PNP, reinstalled it, got reverse lights in R since I don't have the volvo alignment tool, checked tranny fluid, its nice and red and clear. Doesn't help. Same issue. I suspected the worst so this week took it to dealer

these are the codes,,,

ABS - No fault found
CDM-0001 Vehicle speed signal (VSS) Signal missing - DTC is found not active (what's this mean??)
CDM-DF13 CAN bus H-signal Signal too high - DTC found not active
CDM-DF-16 CAN bus L-signal Signal too high - DTC found not active
ECM-530D Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) TCM - Faulty signal - DTC found active
ETM - no fault found
IMM-321 Initiation signal from engine control module (ECM) Signal missing - DTC found active
SRS - no fault found
TCM -0039 Gear shift position sensor Faulty signal - DTC found active
VGLA - No fault found

Volvo says basically this.....

TCM-0039 is a ghost code. Because its the only TCM specific code, and there are no other TCM specific codes, the recommendation of the dealer tech (go figure) is to replace transaxle as a unit. I believe I have also read this in the manual on volvo tips about the AW 50-42 - that the mfg recommends replacement if there are no TCM specific codes.

So now what's going on then? The tech said he found the transmission linkage was adjusted incorrectly. He's correct, I often have to 'find' drive.
The tech surmises that because of this, we must have ran the vehicle in 3 all the time (which you'd have to be really stupid to do as there is an arrow on the dash that prompts shifting up), and because of this, lockup is never achieved (this is his story), which elevates the transaxle temp. (I believe only driving in L prevents lockup, wouldn't there also be an overtemp code stored if this were true?) I guess this heat caused some type of internal damage to the trans and he eagerly handed us a $3000 repair estimate. Tech said that everything else seemed to be working properly. What prevents operation once the car warms up a bit? As soon as the tranny warms up the clutches no longer engage. (Why?) No mention about the sudden appearance of the whining noise.

I was really worried to take it into Volvo because I expected this type of analysis from the local dealer, but following a lot recommendations on several forums, I wanted the Volvo codes.

I don't know whether he actually checked the solenoids or did any specific tests other than see that there are no other TCM codes and he probably is guessing the rest I'd reckon. However, with all that said, I suspect the tech is right and the tranny is and always was blown.

So there you have it.

Any ideas from any of you out there? Are some of these other codes such as VSS code and the Immobilizer code concerning? And what exactly does it mean by DTC is found not active? Does that mean its an old code? Comments, including 'change fluid and check the level first' are appreciated of course. thanks guys

I did a little digging on that P1618 code and its an internal TCM fault that trips and ECM fault, that turns on your CEL...

This might be the entire problem, but its depressing that Volvo can't tell you that because the TCM codes are their domain.

I think we need to get you someone with VIDA nearby.

I don't know if TCMs are married to the car like the ECM on a 1999 CANBUS but Henry and Mike will know that.

Well, that is less than helpful.....

1618 is a communication code (or lack thereof)
These (BELOW) are the only ones to worry about, not active means just that NOT active. It means it threw that code once for whatever reason but it's not happening now

ECM-530D Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) TCM - Faulty signal - DTC found active
IMM-321 Initiation signal from engine control module (ECM) Signal missing - DTC found active
TCM -0039 Gear shift position sensor Faulty signal - DTC found active

1618 is the 530D for VIDA

2007 V70 2.5T White/Oak 111,000 MILES. Polestar tune, IPD bars, rear spoiler, dark grey Thors, DWS 06, HU850, sub.
