2004 V70 T5 Stiff Steering

Hello everyone,

As a quick intro, I have a 2004 V70 T5 since last year. Bought at 159k and now up to 190. Had front wheel bearing replaced about 6 months ago and just now the front right lower ball joint.

2 days after I had the ball joint replaced the steering became very hard. Not all the time but when turning it was hard then ok then hard then ok etc.

Read up on this forum and thought I had found the problem. Steering knuckle needed greasing. Looked up tutorials online and was about to go ahead and have a real look under the car when I read a post here saying these cars don`t have a steering knuckle anymore. Parts section does show me a steering knuckle though.

Anyhow today I went under the car and had a look. Didn`t see how the “steering knuckle” could cause my issue but did track down the steering column and lower shaft. Following some comment on here about how the lower shaft and joint can start seizing up and need greasing now and then I proceeded by spraying the joint with PB blaster and let it sit for a few hours.

Just took it for a test drive and the difference is amazing. It is back to its old self.

I was wondering how I can grease/oil this joint since the PB is more like a penetrating oil I am guessing and won`t stay in position long. So looking for a way to grease this, very difficult to access, joint.


And thanks to the forum for giving me the tips and help to “fix” this problem without resorting to a mechanic. And this just by looking up old threads.

Personnally I use "Fluid Film" to lube this joint. You can raise the booth near the firewall for a better access (by the inside). It will lube and protect against rust.

When you say "by the inside" do you mean inside the engine compartment (access via the bonnet) or inside via the passenger compartment?

Via the passenger compartment.

Look under the brake pedal, you will see the steering shaft going through the firewall.

Raise the booth and you will find the joint under.

well finally got around to getting the fluid film (at 2nd canadian tire), pulled up the booth, sprayed the joint and fitted the booth back (hardest part of the whole operation).
We`ll see how it turns out.

I got another question on the Powersteering fluid capacity but will start a new thread.

Howdy folks!,
I see this is specific to the v70? wondering , will this apply to the S60?? 2004?

Trying to track down the "stiff steering gremlin" myself. flushed/changed new ps fluid last night to no avail. I'm hoping I can start from inside the car/steering column assembly and work my way down to as close to the rack as I can, cleaning and lubricating everything/anything that might solve this issue.
