I have a 2001 S60 with automatic transmission issues - the car doesn't engage in gear when I move the shifter.
Here's my question...
While doing a drain & fill (using the upper transmission / radiator hose), the fluid comes out at a nice steady stream when the car is in park or neutral. When I move the shifter into reverse, drive, 4th, 3rd or Low, the flow slows to a drip.
I'm trying to figure out what's wrong with my car, and was wondering what this slow flow was indicative of - front pump, torque converter, maybe a fuse that's out (wishful thinking of course).
Really appreciate your thoughts.
Thanks.
Drain & Fill transmission flush just "drips" when done in gear. Thoughts please...

I read all three post you posted. Your transmission is toasted. No amount of flushing will bring it back to life.
Realistically, you have two options, replace the transmission or sell it for cheap.

Thanks for the suggestions.
Just curious about what might be the cause, and trying to figure out whether the low flow I get when draining my transmission (while the shifter was in gear), was indicative of a specific problem.
Its difficult to just dump my s60 of fifteen years without some understanding as to what failed. Kind of like a relationship - just wanted to know what went wrong.
Was hoping someone might know, based on the symptoms.

Did the car ever have its TCM reprogrammed? Was the fluid change regularly? By default, those 5 speed drop out of drive and into neutral at when you stop to improve NVH (Noise, vibration, and harshness). They found that that programming shorten the transmission's life and there was software update on it.

Your transmission most likely reached the end of its life. That's just the way 2001's are. Sorry, but it's true.

I cannot answer, but when I did flush mine, while it was flowing I was shifting through all the gears (P,N,R,D,4,3) and the flow would not diminish.
Make sure you properly check the fluid level - if the engine is cold, engine at idle in Park, on perfect flat surface, the level should reach the dipstick at the cold mark.
