Replacement engine.
Replacement engine.
I finally acquired a replacement engine for my 97 850. Wish me luck! Any tips for the install?

Just transfer fuel rail and manifolds from old engine if they are different.

Took mine out from the top with transmission attached. Very tight but possible. Was easy to split the transmission when removed. Kept unhooking stuff and bungee cording it back against the radiator. Might be easier to leave transmission in the car. I also did the ziplock baggies and sharpie. Good luck!!

In my opinion that is the easiest way to do it. I split the transmission out to replace a clutch on the '94 and that was more work than pulling the whole engine / transaxle together on the XC.Marty27 wrote:I was wondering if I should pull the transaxle out, attach it to the engine, and reinstall the entire assembly.
You will need a leveler for the hoist so that you can play with the angle to sneak it in and out but the leveler from Harbor Freight is pretty cheap. Even if you split them the leveler makes you life much easier. I pulled mine and put it back in with no assistance at all but having a second set of hands to help guide it around things makes it go smoother.

Agreed on all points.Ozark Lee wrote:In my opinion that is the easiest way to do it. - keep engine and trans together
- use a leveler
- get extra hands, the last one I dropped in there were three of us (two people on the engine, one working the hoist) and it was a piece of cake.

Change the engine mounts, subframe bushings, and control arms if they are in need of changing.
Driver side axle can be left on the transmission when you'll pulling them out, if you have trouble with it.
Hood does open at 90 degree if pull the tabs down on both sides of the hinge.
Leave the a/c compressor and power pump in the car.
