Broken Dipstick and PO455?

Post by songzunhuang »

I was wondering if there could be any connection to the P0455 code and a broken oil dipstick seal. My oil dipstick broke last weekend, leaving the tube venting to the air. I have a new one in house, but haven't installed it yet. Meanwhile my P0455 light came back. Any connection?

BTW - the new dipsticks now have 2 o-rings and will not work with the original dipstick tube. So you end up having to buy the stick, tube and tube o-ring all separately. What a pain. The reason stated was that the old dipsticks would lose the seal. That's why I was wondering if there could be any connection. When I think about it, it's really a different sub-system but I thought I'd put the question out there.
Can't just replace a broken dipstick anymore. They have changed the whole assembly.

Just double check you have the correct tube and dip-stick. Check that the old and new have the same length from the lower seal to the end of the dip-stick when it is pushed fully home. Someone had swapped the di-stick on a Volvo I had and couldn't understand when I filled the oil after and oil change with correct quantity it was always reading low. Turned out the dip-stick was short!

Volvo changed to simplify the number of different dip-sticks and also they did have problems with the single dip-stick 'O-ring' version blowing out as the PCV started to clog as it wasn't tight enough for the crankcase pressure.

As many folks pull the dip-stick out slightly to relieve crankcase pressure when PCV is needing replaced to prevent blowing the oil seals out, P0455 is not linked as this is an emissions problem if I recall, with the SAS pump or emissions leak.

The P0455 is definitely not related to the dipstick.

Since your car is a 1998, start with the easy stuff to attack the P0455 code:

1) Remove and check that the EVAP purge valve (mounted on the fan shroud) holds vacuum in both directions. Clean it with carb cleaner if it does not. Replace the valve if the cleaning is ineffective.

2) Check for a split hose at the vapor canister in front of the left front wheel.

3) Check for split rubber hoses at the rollover valve (above the fuel filter).

Beyond that, it's probably more cost and time effective to have the system "smoke tested".

My 98 has had the P0455 code for what seems half of its life. The cause has always been one of the three items above. Good luck!

The new style dipstick is indeed "better" IMO, but clearly not necessary.

They do still sell the old one, they just don't list it in the parts catalog for your V70. You can tell the dealer you want a dipstick from an 850, part number 1271920, it will match the one that was in there before.

Thanks for the info. I am at item 3 I believe. I replaced the purge valve last year. I dropped the vapor canister and checked the hoses.
I have not looked at the rollover valve. I'll take a look this weekend.

Too bad I can't rent a smoke machine. (Not the kind for a dance party) I'd be interested in trying it out.
