I texted the previous owner of my new '07 S40 to ask when the cabin filter was last changed. Anyway, long story short- I don't think it's ever been changed. So, I got one on Amazon (linked through here!) and ordered a carbonized filter- and it came yesterday. Thought I would tackle it tonight but wow... half way there, I gave up (lack of time to get it done) and buttoned things back up. It's under the accelerator pedal of all places!! The best video I've seen on it is this one:
http://www.carcarekiosk.com/video/2005_ ... in/replace
What's different about it is that it tells you how to deal with the panels- that's where I panicked thinking I was breaking things.
I'll tackle this on the weekend.
Has anyone done it? Any tips?

Thanks for that! I'm going to try without removing the pedal- maybe tomorrow. I got too busy to do it today.
Btw, can anyone confirm that the cover has a screw hole in the middle too?
Some folks over on Volvo Forum (Brit site) who has to remove the filter from the passenger well (and move the fuse box) said that in late '07 for model year '08 the filter cover changed to a wing screw in the center that makes things really easy to deal with. I even have the part number: 30780788 which I'm tempted to get from the dealer because on most sites although the screw only costs a couple of bucks, shipping is like $7 or $8. I'd either like to replace all three though if mine doesn't have a center bolt hole or if it does, just buy one of these wing screws and not bother with all three when I replace the cover.

The MANN replacement filter comes with instructions that include 5 photos. They differ from the VOLVO procedure in that they say not to disconnect the electrical connector on the accelerator pedal. The pedal can just be moved out of the way and left connected. I found this to be true. MANN specs the procedure at 30 minutes. I'm afraid it took me the better part of an afternoon as the filter and relevant fasteners are not easily accessible. It would help to be a contortionist to get this job done in the very tight space near the accelerator pedal.
Les is more.

I'm hoping to do mine (not done yet ;( ) without removing the pedal at all. There's a video on youtube that shows using the carpet to wedge the pedal down and out of the way! Of course that may be a pipe dream!

Did mine a few nights ago- my whole right side is bruised. There was no way to change that filter without taking off the gas pedal. But that was not so much of an issue. The issue was finding the right socket head to fit the ones that are there and getting them on the bolt heads to turn them...definitely use a small ratchet- still takes a contortionist...laying across the door sill is not comfortable at all (and the reason for my bruising). No wonder my local dealer charges $150 for this job. Once out the filter was filthy! The replacement went in without any issue. I replaced the bolt head bolts with winged screws...I used all 3 (on my insistence, FCPEuro carries them now!)- probably only needed to use the center one (like the '08's and beyond) but I have peace of mind now and know what to do next time. The trim pieces were no issue getting loose or putting back- the tabs line up fine and as long as they are in line they snap right back in. the pedal did not have to be disconnected...I just wedged it up between the clutch and brake pedal (oh yeah, mine is a manual transmission- lol)...but you could tie it up if you're concerned about the stress on the wiring.
