Trans problem
I recently purchased a 2002 XC, 226k miles, replaced the valve body due to shift flare issues. Its been driving and shifting great. Today my wife was at work, drove it a short distance and parked it for about 4 hrs., came out to leave and it wont move in any gear. Ive never heard of a trans going out while sitting still. Ive checked the fluid its good, it will shift into neutral and park like it should but wont move in any forward or reverse gear, engine just revs. Any ideas on this one ??

How did you check the fluid level? If the engine is cold, have it idle in P (flat surface) and check the level is at the cold mark

Welcome to my world. I've got a 2001 S60, and have the EXACT same issue.
The car is not drivable.
When I shift into reverse, drive, 4th, 3rd and Low - it's just like being in neutral! The car even rolls in gear.
After the vehicle warms up a bit, I can get it to slowly move forward (in drive, etc.) when I rev the car to 2000 rpm, though I definitely can't drive it in that condition. Reverse is unresponsive.
One unusual issue I have noticed, is when I was doing a drain and fill (using the upper radiator / transmission hose), the fluid flow was strong in neutral and park. In reverse or any forward gear, the flow slowed to a dribble. Someone with a normal transmission said the flow was steady in all gears, including drive and reverse.
Hopefully someone can diagnose the issue! I'm hoping it's something I can do without removing the transmission, which is beyond my scope of expertise.
Please post back when you find a resolution! Thanks!!

Sorry but sounds like what I have. A 2000 pound paperweight that needs a new transmission. I tried putting in a new rebuilt valve body and that did not solve the problem. Drain and fills did not help. My C70 goes a few miles and once hot the car is like in neutral and wont move. Makes for a nice lawn ornament. I believe there is friction material that clogs an interior screen (filter) and causes the solenoids to starve out and lose pressure. Anyway... That's my unprofessional diagnosis for mine based on my research.

I think my issue is in the torque converter. It has no pressure obviously since i have to rev it up to make it move. I just dont understand how it could fail sitting still.

This will happen if the fluid is just a little low

On mine... only 96K miles! Once the friction material gets the chance to clog the screen it will not move. driving or not... its the warming up of it then the clog and then it wont move.
