'92 240 Fault Code 311

Post by raven2867 »

For about a month my car has been intermittently starting very rough, some shaking and coughing until I get it going for a consistent amount of time (even just traveling at a slow speed will fix the shaking/coughing). Last week I flat out could not get the car started after work and had to keep my foot on the gas for about a minute for the engine to even catch and then rev it up for probably 30 seconds before it wouldn't act like it was going to stall out. When I'm revving it I sometimes get a high-pitched squealing noise and a little back-fire noise. Again once I get it up to even a low speed the engine evens out and it runs okay, although if I get stuck in slow traffic or am at a red light for a long time it hiccups a little. Like the shaking and coughing this problem too is inconsistent. It wouldn't start Tuesday after work, but Wednesday morning it was fine; then Wednesday evening I had issues but I stopped somewhere on my way home from work and I had no problems starting it after that.

The only code currently being thrown is 311 which is the speed sensor. I had the MAF sensor replaced almost a year ago and for a while a code was being thrown for that, but I cleared all the codes last week and then drove it for a day and ran the codes again which is when only 311 came up.

I also badly need the engine mounts replaced and so there is a lot of shaking and vibration under the hood.

Any tips for what should be checked in regards to the 311 code would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Buy TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline, and use one can of Techron Concentrate Plus.

Does cruise work? Do you have ABS?

Air filter *should* be good but I will be sure to double check that.

My cruise control doesn't work but I do have ABS (or so I think... What is the easiest way to make sure that is working?).

Thanks for your other bits of advice! I'll look into all that.

Thanks! As soon as I read your post I realized my question was rather idiotic. Doing self-repairs is a bit of a new thing for me, I have the good fortune of having a Volvo-capable dad, but now I live several thousand miles away and have to research the heck out of everything and then send what I think is relevant to my boyfriend to do the actual manual labor part.

I THINK my ABS light may be out. I put the car into 'on' but not started and the ABS didn't light up with all the other lights, which I'm guessing it should have. (Please correct me if I am wrong.) I will look into this further this evening, because now that I'm reading more on other threads I'm wondering if my #6 fuse is working at all. When I was having issues getting the car started the other day I spun the fuse with the car on and didn't get any spark. (Yes, that was my dad who posted the questions a few days back about the #6 fuse and thank you for the article you linked to!)

I really appreciate you pointing me in the right direction on all of this.

Late 1993-240 production vehicles used a different wiring and fuse arrangement than 240s before this. Fuse #6 in yours is related to fuel injection relay, and sends power to LH 2.4 computer and EZK computer.
