Tire Pressure System Service Required - what to do?

Hi there,

Recently this message popped up on my dashboard: Tire Pressure System Service Required.
It comes up once in a while usually after 15-30 minutes of freeway driving, it goes away if the car is turned off for few hours. Tire pressure is normal.
Somebody told me that it is a sign of batteries getting low in wheel sensors. Is that true? Is it possible to replace just the batteries without buying new sensors?

Ouch. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing. Sensors don't have batteries, they just...sense.

Ouch. Sensors DO have batteries. Otherwise how would they send radio signal to the car computer? There's no wire going to the wheel...

Ouch indeed. I'm suitably chastised.

Get a good tire pressure gauge and set the tires to the correct pressure first, then worry about the TPMS

Done that already. Supposedly those sensors last about 7-9 years on average so it is quite likely they are at the end of their life span. Apparently there's no way to replace the batteries in them, the whole sensor module have to be new. Does anyone know of good aftermarket sensors that are compatible with 08 Volvo S60? There's plenty on Amazon but some of them are hit or miss. I don't want to pay twice for the tire mounting and balancing...

Yes you have to replace entire sensor, batteries only is not an option. I have a similar problem on our 07 - two stems are leaking intermittently, must be replaced, which means replace integrated TPMS too.

I still haven't decided what to do, probably spring for a new set of four at some point. My wife likes having these. Sams Club said they could do it for about (I think?) $30 a wheel installed, seemed reasonable.

Waiting it out, will keep an eye on this thread.

you can change just the battery according to some youtube videos but it involves cutting the potting (sealing) compound, sourcing the new battery and soldering it in. maybe a new sensor would be easier..

The tyre guy that fitted TMPS in my wheels thought i was crazy, but i think they are a good safety and fuel saving feature. This is what i will be trying when my aftermarket sensors go flat.
