Had a random stall the other day. Engine not quite warmed up. Just 50 feet after stopping at a red light. Going about 10 mph. Easy on the throttle. No check engine light. Bluetooth OBDII reader+Torque Pro showed no fault codes.
I want to see if the ECU or misc modules recorded anything. I read that VIDA/DICE is 99+ only. What are my options? I would like to avoid the stealership.
thanks!
what is 98 S70 GLT computer thinking?

Often associated with failing fuel pump relay. Put some diagnostic tools in the trunk so you can catch it if it repeats

thank you. I will research "diagnosing failing fuel pump relay".
So... what options/software (besides ODBII scanner) can I use on the 98 S70? To talk to the computer and say reset the Service light?

The program Vol-fcr will reset the service light and can pull most codes from the OBDII interface on the S70 97 and 98. You'll need a laptop running windows (XP or Win7/8) and a VAG-com cable.

You also should be thinking about where you are on the maintenance curve for consumable parts like
plugs
wires
cap
rotor
ignition coil
..as in when they were last replaced miles/time

No fault codes will be present for failing fuel pump relay. When the symptoms become more common you can replace the fuel relay with a jumper between where terminals 15 and 87 connected (usually a paper clip does the job) and see if symptoms persist.

thank you, I will look into Vol-fcr.
- new plugs, wires, distributor+cap within the last 1000 miles. also refreshed K&N air filter. Figured I needed new ones when I started getting cylinder #4 misfires when trying to pass on the interstate.
- steam cleaned inside of engine by sucking distilled water through vacuum tree - within the last 1000 miles.
- PCV within the last 10k miles.
- long life oil change every 5 to 6k miles
- transmission fluid is bright pink. although the passenger side hose to the radiator looks to be leaking.
I had the fuel pump mistakenly replaced a few years back... maybe 40 to 50k miles ago? Due to random stalls. The "honest" local volvo specialist charged me ~$500 for the job. When that didn't fix it, they were like "oops, looks like it's the fuel pump relay. We will only charge you $70 for the relay". I need to see if they will give me a printout of all my services with them to get exact dates/miles.
I also had a random "shift arrow lights up then stall" that turned out to be a wire rubbing against something and rubbing away the insulation and shorting against something else in the engine bay. I tried emailing the "honest" volvo specialist to see if they had notes on which wire. No response yet.
Everything has been pretty smooth the last 1k miles... until this incident last thursday.
I am just trying to make this car safe to drive... until I can replace it with a manual P2R or auto P80R.

thank you. I am going to replace the relay. I would rather this doesn't happen again when I am on the interstate or when my kids are in the car. Low pucker factor = good.

You can use a VAG-COM USB cable with VOL-FCR. Just search "Volvo Scanner" on eBay, I got one with the serial cable marked "Volvo Scanner." You may be able to use that cable with a serial to USB adapter, but that didn't work for me.
