MUCH EASIER way. Simply get a stout chisel on the lip of the ball joint. A few leisurely but persistent taps with a 2 or 4 lb sledge works the edge of the chisel in prying out the pressed-in ball point a mm or two, then repeat a bit more onto opposite side a bit wider and so on. I was able to get both 10 year old ball joints (2005 XC90, but same anatomy) out in 10 minutes with everything still mounted onto car, no problem. Cleaned out the hole with a wire brush on a cordless drill, blew it out with compressed air (or brake cleaner or whatever you have). Super easy to tap the new ones in with a light hammer. Tightening down the mounting bolts finished it off with no gaps. Never even detached the ball joints form the control arms.
