2001 XC70 - bought with electrical tape over cel and warning light

Post by potiusmori »

Hey guys so I've been volvo free for 18 months.....until I just bought another used one after my car decided to die. So paid $1000 for a 2001 xc70 with 190k. Timing belt was done recently but upon looking at it it ran rough like a misfire. Guy said coil pack code came up he cleared it hence no check engine light and it sounded like a dead coil pack so I still bought it.....grrrrrr..... so got home changed coil pack and viola nothing still running rough. Unplugged maf and realized no cel. So take out the dash and seen the guy put electrical tape over cel and warning light and cut the ribbon to the text screen. Real nice... so took tape off and verified cel light lights up.. Now she is still running rough but has no CEL. I did a compression test on a mostly warmed up motor and from left to right numbers were 165, 185, 185, 100, 188. So my big question is this...is it worth my time and possibly $300-$500 in parts to figure out why it's running so rough? I know off hand that it needs:
Lower intercooler hose (slimy, oil and decayed)
Top torque motor mount
Fuel filter
PCV system
And probably new vacuum lines.
Finally one last question is would the low compression in the fourth cylinder cause it to run really rough and shakey

If it's possible to save this car I would love to due to the interior and exterior being in flawless condition. No cracks in leather no stains and probably the nicest looking car I've ever owned lol

I'd say you have way many issues with it. It might had a burned valve or leaking head gasket. If the transmission works well try sell it apart, same for the throttle body.

you were right to test compression, and 100 PSI is low.
that's why it runs rough.

Call your BMV/Echeck people and see if the seller is responsible if they sell a car that will not pass emissions.

someone tampered with the emissions equipment on that car, the MIL is considered emissions equipment.

I'd make the seller take it back, as they obviously intended to deceive a buyer, and are POS human beings.

I would love to return it to the buyer but he knows full well what he did and is avoiding all contact. Furthermore I live in the beautiful state of Rhode Island where every used car sale is considered a "as-is" sale so there is virtually nothing I can do. I might invest a couple hundred and drive it til it dies. I won't be selling it to anyone else unless their buying it for a parts car

Give it a small amount of oil in the cylinder and see if the compression comes up. If it does you likely have a burnt valve.
