Which odometer gear usually fails

My odometer stopped working recently and I'm looking at replacement gears. Which gear usually fails, main drive gear or pod gear?

The usual suspect is small gear but I always replace both of them. The large gears have been soft on all of them that I have replaced.

I used IPD kit for $19.95 in 2010 to restore the dash -- magical.

On Volvo 850, I will lift the top cover off completely next time, NOT just the driver's side as IPD suggests. Now loosened with unseen damaged clips and fasteners - it shakes and squeaks.

xheart: did the IPD kit come with just the one gear? Or did you order the second one separately and change that too?

I changed both in mine, and they both were broken. Ordered it from a guy in Hungary, made with detran plastic. It works like a champ. Good price. I think there is a thread on here with the information.

My go to guy is Jeff Caplan at odometergears.com. They are a bit pricey at $25.00/gear but they are perfect and they will last forever. I do re-lamp everything while the cluster is out and I also remove the Service light.

After much deliberation, I order the kit only -- one gear and the dash bulbs.
It is working with zero issues.

I would keep the Volvo original if there is no damage to larger gear. Look closely with a magnifier, i did, it looked crisp as new.

Here in Holland a guy makes them out of brass and sells kits including the light bulbs. ETS is the name I think.

And it is possible to install the gear upside down- ask me how I know !!
