98 V70 FWD Clutch/Manual Transmission

Post by cuhfs »

Hi, Here's where I am at... I removed and installed the new clutch and am now trying to reinstall the transmission housing. This is the jack I used to remove the transmission http://blog.harborfreight.com/auto-enth ... sion-jack/

I am unable to get the transmission back into the correct position mainly because it sits on the jack in the wrong position and I can't seem to muster the strength to spin the housing to get the bolts to align (even with a helper). Just reaching out here in case anyone has any tips. I did try adding studs (cut bolts) to help align but I am too far off... for that to even help.

Any ideas and tips would be appreciated. Thank you

Do you have an engine hoist? When I did this I had the engine sitting on some wood with the transmission hanging from the hoist. With it in the air its a bit easier to move it to get the holes lined up.

Engine hoist. Rent, borrow, buy one.

I much prefer to put them in as one unit then try to install the transmission while engine is still in.

"Half pregnant" now with this transmission... no turning back... No choice but to install from below. Will try to suspend it from the engine support bar and lift it up with a come-a-long strap. Will leave jack below it not weight bearing. Maybe I will have more maneuverability by suspending it from above based on the comments here. Thanks. Any other ideas are welcome.

Maybe two strong people can put the trans suspended from 2x4s from above while you guide it in?

I don't think an M56 weighs that much

I used a ratchet strap around the transmission that was looped over the top support that was suspending the engine. With the strap I was able to lift the transmission up and take the weight and it gave me the mobility to rotate it into the proper position by hand. As I recall I think I may have added a second strap to control how the transmission rotated. Doing it purely by hand is not an option for me, I'm just not that big and beefy of a guy.

I had a similar problem with the transmission jack when I was putting the transfer case back in on my Suburban last year but in that case I wound up calling my son for a second set of hands. He is a big and beefy guy.

I found a picture of how I put it back in and indeed I used a second strap just to rotate the transmission. It really wasn't carrying any weight so I just stuck that strap over the upper torque mount bracket.

When your back on the ground with no room to extend or even to move your arm, it's difficult to move a 110lb transmission. Been there, done that, don't do that anymore.

Manipulating even half that weight with fine motor control is tough. But you can hang 110 # from above with two people while a third guides it into place from below

Closing this loop. Hung it from above... (wrapped the strap around it) from the fat part of the transmission and it slid right in. Thank you again.
