These things take an E-torx socket. My new bolts that I got from FCP fit nice and snug in a E14. Yet the existing bolts seem to be somewhere around an E15. An E14 won't fully seat, and the E16 is too loose. I've looked online for about 45 minutes now, and even had a friend check the torx sets and singles at Sears, and I'm coming up with noting. Even Snap-on and Mac don't list a E15 in their catalogs. I've already slightly rounded off some of the prongs on the first one because of the E14 not seating all the way, so I really don't want to try anything until I find something that fits properly. Is there ar proprietary Volvo socket for this or something crazy like that?

They are likely caked up with rust, and appear bigger. Sometimes you need to soak the heads in some good penetrating oil (I use Kroil) and hammer the socket onto the head of the screw

If you scour my threads for my second FWB replacement hub on my 1999T5 I noted the bolts on the replacement bearing were different than OEM. I noted that same taper which means several size Torx bits will fit

You want lots of tool bit contact on these as they are really tight.

Found it here...the FCP wB uses a 11 mm six point socket, not a Torx

I have spare new ones if you bugger one up, or more than one.

Are you sure they are an E-torx? I can't recall exactly what I used when I changed the hub on the S70 but I don't remember it being anything unusual. I think It may have been a 12 point socket. I do have a set of E-Torx sockets but they are 3/8" drive and they aren't that big.

They were not E Torx when I did this job - I think that is why the 11mm head hex fit.

Whatever you do, get a good fit of the tool on these - they are really tight and are stretch torqued when correctly installed. I don't think you want your FWB housing coming loose...ugh

Man, how I wish the old bolts were just a standard hex head. Or I wish I'd tried a six or twelve point socket on them before I ruined them. I tried one of those Craftsman universal socket things with all the little teeth in it. They're supposed to fit all sorts of things, including E-torx, and all that did was chew up the old heads like a stick of butter. The new ones are E-torx though. No doubt about it. From FCP. Part #: VOL-1387892. My E-14 fits them nice and snug, no problem. It was the old ones that I couldn't find anything to fit properly. I took some micrometer readings of both of them, and they're different. Across the head from peak to peak, the old ones measure 12.76mm. The new ones measure 12.54mm. From valley to valley, the old ones measure 9.57mm, and the new ones measure 9.20. Hopefully you can see by the photos that the old ones aren't coated in goo, just discolored and dirty. I doused them in Kroil and PB blaster several times over a several hours before I tried to remove them. And if you notice in the profile comparison, the lower part of the head that has a somewhat conical shape to it is different between the two. As it turns out, there is no such thing as an E-15. And I screwed up two bolts badly by trying the E-14 on them. They are now stuck in the car and I can't get them out. I managed to break the other two free with the E-16, even though it was a very wiggly fit. I have no idea how I am going to get these other two out. I'm sick of messing with it today. I've tried grinding and drilling the heads, but there's just no room back there. All I seem to be accomplishing is getting annoyed and wasting my entire day. My only option now it seems is to take the whole knuckle off. But that'll have to be tomorrow.

Thanks for posting the pics to show the difference, and Volvo be damned for using weirdo screws!

On one of my 850's, I had to remove the entire steering knuckle to remove the 2 hub bolts I stripped the heads on. Tons of fun

That sounds very familiar. In fact, I'll be doing the same thing tomorrow

Start shocking them NOW with a punch, hammer and Kroil/PB/your favorite elixir. Give that stuff days to work magic, not minutes.

Shock and apply in morning, shock and apply in evening.

Good luck. There is a subtle difference between those fasteners isn't there?
