Strut tower rubber broken '95 850 t5 wagon

Post by kaneelschep »

I have this annoying noise for some time now. Every bump or shock I hear a crunch on the left side. I looked at everthing but only thing I found was a really worn driverside steering arm. Wich I replaced.
So I read about it here. And it can be a few things.
Top strut tower rubber, sway bar, or linkage.

Linkage looks good, sway bar is solid. But the rubber could be it.
I made a short movie:

Passenger: http://vid337.photobucket.com/albums/n3 ... V_1401.mp4

So that seems to be the issue. But now what? :) What is wise to do and replace, Since the whole leg seems to have to come off anyway.

Thanks!

What's in the teardown video: The strut tower has to come out, be disassembled with spring compressors, then put back together and reinstalled. It is the exact same amount of work as replacing the strut so if you were thinking about that, now might be a good time.

Thanks a lot. This sais a lot allready!
Yes, I was also very interested in what to do more since it will all be apart anyway.
And wich part to replace and wich part to leave.
I am definetly not on an unlimited budget, but I do not like half work.

Oops I missed this: actually the problem is *not* the strut mount!

When the top nut spins, it is because the failed part is the spring seat, what tryingbe posted.

Strut mount, spring seat, who asked you? What difference does it make? It'll all come apart. Just give your info and try not to correct everyone's comments.

I forgot to ask, but just to be clear.
The driver side clearly has the issue robert shows in the video wich I will replace.

But is the passengerside ok? since the rubber there seems to hover above the tower. ;)

Thanks

Usually the other side is not far behind. If cash is real tight, you can get the spring seat and replace it but that is a lot work just to replace that one part. In my tear down video, the other side was 80% as bad. Age, wear, etc., just takes it toll. Some people have experienced them banging on the underside of the hood.
