part #31256008 angle gear sleeve

Post by dcarguy »

Thanks in advance dudes and dudettes: So, I've been told the angle drive connector sleeve for a 2000 model V70XC automatic,#9181408/9143910 is No Longer Supplied /NLS. However, I see the sleeve for the manual trans that has the same part no. 9181408/9143910 has been changed to 31256008. Also, I see the outer diameter of the 91256008 is the same as the auto trans unit I have, and they look the SAME in pictures. So, the question is: will the 31256008 fit the auto trans as well, or, are all the parts websites and Volvo dealer correct in that his new no. fits only the manual trans and there are NO new sleeves available and I and my customer are SOL on this? If anyone has come across this and KNOWS if this 31256008 will fit the auto, let me know, thanks.

If the OD is the same then it should fit and work. I don't think the splines are different and the common original part number would indicate that splines are the same between the two transmissions. The manual and automatic half shafts have different part numbers as well but they are interchangeable. Another check to confirm the OD would be to look at the part number on the seal to see if it is the same. If it is the same then the OD has to be the same

In general, Volvo uses beefier materials for the manual transmission components that are otherwise functional equivalents.

Viva Performance sell their own sleeve. They say it is for a 5 Speed, but I recall pulling an angle gear from a 4 speed and I'm fairly sure they are the same part. Maybe worth checking with these guys. They are very helpful.

OK, received the 31256008 sleeve from the dealer. Checked all dimensions and the only difference is that the snap ring groove is slightly wider at the angle drive end than the stock part,9181408, So, about 2.5 mm wider towards the angle drive end, or, you have 2.5 mm less spline hooking up to the angle drive. No problem, not perfect, but better than installing some used, half worn out part. Should last many many miles. My recommendation, grease the shit out of it when one installs it. Installed the sleeve and the angle drive, road tested, works well. So, the conclusion is that the 31256008 will work on a 2000 model V70XC automatic trans/angle drive setup. 8)

Thanks for getting back with the update. That will be good news for those of us nuts enough to have P80 AWD vehicles!

I installed this part on my 2000 V70 XC automatic this weekend. The seal number is AH 3187E. I used a vice grip slide hammer to extract the sleeve. Inside the sleeve are splines seperated by a clip. The outer splines were heavily worn away. I had to raise the engine to get the transfer case out. Whacked in the new sleeve with a board and hammer.
