broken into ignition switch cylinder.

Post by sergitin32 »

Hi guys, dark times here with my Volvo 240 DL 1989. Some mean person broke into my car and tried to start it with some tool that broke my ignition switch cylinder. I still have my other Volvo 240 DL (1983 thou) parked here to get parts from before I put her down to Volvo heaven. I just called my dealer and they claim the part would be around 400 dollars for a whole new switch, I was wondering about the cylinder specificallly, has any one taken these apart and can let me know if the cylinders would interchange from one car to the next.

The switches are diferent I know, my new one is an 2.4 bosch ignition and the old one is just points, but I wonder if by some luck punch the cylinders might be interchangable. I whish they were, I can not affor that part right now even with the insurance help, if it proceeds. The key still works but its kinda hard to trun and it wont turn back from the starting position and it is clunky as hell. I am so pissed off... speechless.

On the upside of this whole thing, the trunk had a lot of tools inside which they did not carry with them, I think I will disengage the central lock system from the trunk or do some kinda switch hidden in the car to turn it on or off (any ideas on this?), thanks God they did not take my tools, that would have been a killer blow.

Any piece of advice would be very appreciated.

Thanks a lot and enjoy the holiday if you are in Canada.

OK an update as per now I do have access to a wreck yard with the ignition switch and keys for only 95 dollars so I am in luck there,
the thing is it is 95 dollars if I take it out. I am a home mechanic and I know my ways around tools but had never done this job and I am reading around its a hard job to do? The wrek yard guy says its 200 bucks if he does the removal. What do you guys think? Any suggestions?

Thanks.

I just bought the right year switch from e-bay for about 70 canadian dollars, I guess I was in luck this time.
Still any hints on the install would be helpful. I can see the switch comes with the sheer bolts, they are round and not a clue how to put them in without doing something todefeat its purpose... I could cut a grove and use a flat screw driver but if any one has a better idea how to put them in and leave them like that it would be great.

See the PDF enclosed, and see this thread: Ignition Switch (electrical part) Replacement

I have no idea what will be involved...you decide.
