240 brake light issue/won't come on

Post by Patman »

Hey there, I just replaced my 240's taillight housings with new aftermarket ones, circuitboards, bulbs, all new, in an attempt to fix my brake light issue.
I did not change any wiring/connections.
The brake lights still won't come on (the third upper one does), however, the light where the rear drivers side fog lamp is located comes on when brake is depressed??
Very perplexed, I took a pic of the passenger side cluster, and this one green/white wire was hanging loose. Can someone tell me where this one goes inside the white clip, and what might be the problem? Are the wires just in the wrong locations possibly on both sides?
Thanks!

First, review how Volvo's rear lights are setup here

Volvo's or aftermarket's wiring diagrams do not go into such detail, as requested. So, either one finds another 240 Volvo, or they get out their multi-meter.

By removing the connector, and having someone press down on brake-pedal, then with your trusty multi-meter, which is grounded on one side, you can determine which pin has power. If no power present when brake pedal is pressed down, then come on back for more info.

Then, with multimeter set in ohms setting, check the brake bulb circuit on the circuit-board, and determine which connector slot is associated.

Like I said, find a similar 240, or trace it out...

Can someone please post a pic, or list which color wires go to which numbered slot on the connectors for me? The pins have power to them, but I don't know which slot each wire corresponds to. I need to know for driver and passenger sides.
I think there may be something wonky with this that I've inherited from a previous owner, but can't know for sure until I know the wiring is indeed in the correct order.
Thanks much!

If you have a 1991 240, then here is a wiring diagram. With a test light, I would confirm this wiring diagram info with your vehicle's color-coded wiring.
