Car got back from mechanic about two months ago, had some top end work (Burnt valves, no compression, destroyed head gasket).
It's been running great until today, started stuttering when I tried starting it in town and now stalls right after starting. Relays tested good. I can force it to run if I give it gas but that causes black smoke from the exhaust and runs extremely rich, won't idle at all. Only dash lights on after it dies are the battery, up arrow and oil pressure. Feels like massive misfiring.
Tried disconnecting the MAF and it idles fine. Cleaned the MAF and it made zero difference. For fun I connected the MAF while it was disconnected from the intake and it idled fine.
Just want to make sure there isn't something else glaringly obvious to look at before replacing the MAF.
Also, it might be because I'm used to working on old Saabs running on Bosch LH 2.2 and 2.4, but I don't see the platinum hotwire inside the maf, only a rectangular protrusion downwards. I'm hoping this is some kind of newfangled hotwire-on-a-chip and my car didn't eat the wire.

The MAF is indeed "newfangled" and the sensor is self contained in the rectangular device in the MAF tube. No worries about eating the sensor wire.
SAAB was pretty fancy, my old 142 had a flapper that opened more with more air flow.
Did you get the codes read? If so post back the P code numbers.

When the MAF sensor is bad, you'll know it. I'd read the codes before doing anything.

I...do not have a code reader. I know I should, but I don't mess with OBDII enough to get one.
Anyhow, I took a gamble and won. Needed car ASAP and got a new Bosch MAF overnight, plugged it in and all is well. Unplugged battery to reset ECU (Assuming I read correctly and this is an adaptive/learning one) due to high idle, now it's absolutely perfect.
Seat of the pants is noticeably better. I've always loved how quick Volvo made this landwhale, I'd love to find a c30 with the same engine and a long, twisty dirt road.

My 98 base didn't throw a code and drove in stalling mode for around 100 miles until CEL was set. After retrieving the code I simply unplugged it and drove from FL to NJ and back that way without even loosing MPGs.
