Traveler brand oil from Tractor Store.

Post by cuhfs »

Anyone using The Tractor Store branded oil? Travelers brand. They have 10-30 and 10-40 in 5 gal buckets for about half of what the auto parts store charges for Castrol GTX. Not sure which is better. Just wanted to see if anyone has been using it for a long time with no issues? and get any thought on that topic.

Who says it's Castrol GTX? I read the description and couldn't find that. I did see they sell that too though but more expensive. They do have Rotella in a synthetic blend which some people really like and the price is great as well! I would just be very Leary of an off-brand like Traveller Store branded oil although if it truly is Castrol this is a find!

I was not saying it is Castrol. I was saying that I use Castrol and that's expensive. Sorry for the confusion.

Yup, nothin' but ol' Travelers brand for about eighty-seven years til the engine seized up last fall, 'course that tree growin' out the exhaust pipe might'a had somethin' to do with it. :D

That stuff is dirt cheap and looks like garbage to me. You don't need to spend a ton of money for boutique fancy oil, but seriously, at least go with some Mobil 1 or something. You can get those 5 quart jugs for a great price at Walmart (~$25?). Don't get oil from auto stores. I'm not Walmart fan, but I will go there for motor oil. That cheap oil probably has few if any additives. Oil is the one thing that keeps your engine from shelling itself, definitely not the best place to go super cheap on.

Please don't use that stuff.

Agreed, oil is the lifeblood of any engine, go with common brands, err on the side of known results.

What specifications does the oil claim to meet? Check your owners manual to see what's required got your car, as a first step.

Deciding if you believe the spec would. Be step two, to frugality nirvana.

Draining the oil out of car one and putting it into car 2 would be step three.

There are 9 more steps in the program but my computer screen ran out of ink.

There is a misconception in this world that: "cheap is bad".
From what I understand Traveler brand oil from Tractor Supply is made by WPP, the same company that makes Supertech for Walmart.
It is decent oil.
Nothing to worry about.

It is not so much oil brand but the short trips that damage the engine.

You will be fine with this oil.

I tend to agree with abscate. Oils are made to spec. If you can find the spec listed on the bottle, it's probably as good as any other oil. It's more important to change it regularly than to get any particular brand.

I looked up Traveller oil on the TSC website and it looks like it meets the API SN spec. It'll be fine. Change it at a reasonable interval.

Like for many others on this site, the oil I use in my cars has changed over time. Emprically, I would say it probably will continue to do so. Currently, my Volvos all get a full synthetic oil.

For good reason, there is an entire, super active forum site dedicated just to motor oils ... http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php
