Fuel fill was slow, now also have a fuel leak.

The trip to and from VA went great last weekend, but during the trip fill ups were only possible very slowly. Last night I started smelling gas in and around the car. Today saw a spot near the right side, between the wheels.

I did search, but did not find matching symptoms.

I did not jack it up yet, but any info ahead of time will be greatly appreciated.

Check out Neals long thread on rear axle replacement on his 2000R. He has some nice photos of the top of the tank of this series for your reference.

I hope you don't have to drop the tank...ugh....is that new one here yet?

was the right side elbow coming out of the sending unit at the front of the tank.

someone "repaired" it before. Quite half assed. I half assed it much much better.

Dropping the sub-frame is not something you want to do, but there are 2-3 possible contenders for the slow filling issue:

1) Regular over-filling/topping up after the cut-off I believe can cause the carbon can to get fuel into it slowing it's ability to breath air while filling slowing the process. Only way to possibly rectify it to remove the pipe to the roll over valve and the return pressure line and hope by running air through it you can clear some of the fuel out and allow the carbon to dry. Removing the filter or replacing it requires dropping the rear sub-frame as the removable holding bracket Volvo thought was a good idea to place at the front of the tank where you can't access it!

2) There is an air filter on most of the AWD breather pipes that is fitted near the top of the filler pipe. If you live in a damp or dusty area it is possible that this has clogged which prevents the air escaping while filling.

3) The roll-over valve has stuck which again acts to prevent air escaping up the pipe to the filter.

The last 2 can be replaced without dropping the rear sub-frame but access is difficult. The roll over valve is partially accessible from the access plat in the trunk.

The leak was at the sending unit. A previous horrible back yard fix was leaking and was corrected with a very nice shop repair.
