2001 S40 Various oil leaks... I am new here

Post by malcolm2 »

please be kind, I am new to Volvo and have started investigating the subject. It seems to be coming from high on the back or firewall side. Turbo return oil was suggested, but here is a picture....

the fittings (banjo, right?) are dirty but seem dry. Is there one underneath too?

Thanks, Clark

To me, that doesn't look too unusual for a 14 year old car with a turbocharger.
I do see some blowby on the intake hose.
Take the hose off and inspect the inside of it. If there is a lot of oil, maybe your seals are shot.
Is there one what underneath?
Are you getting leaks on the ground under the car?

Better late than never.... Have spent a year, on and off of course, fiddling with this car. This particular issue ended up being the cam seal on the top right of the engine (drivers side). I went ahead and did the turbo tube repair while I was in there. So this leak is done. I seem to find others (or maybe the same one). I am afraid it is the cam gear, which the PO said he fixed. Do both gears leak. This recent problem looks to be the back cam.

VVT hub is a notorious leaker. Many (including me) have been fooled into thinking it was an exhaust cam seal leaking.
My VVT hub seal went out around 185,000 miles.
There is no replaceable seal - you have to change the whole hub assembly.
