Hi All,
Love this site but dont post much as I've been able to fix and learn a ton here. On my fourth Volvo (XC-90, V-70T5, 960 and now V70R) and really enjoy them.
Anyway, my 2K V70R AWD (185k miles)developed a low speed vibration (@30-40mph) and a resistance after a long 130 mile trip. Glad I was close to home where i limped it into the garage. I thought perhaps the emergency brake was on and confirmed it wasnt but there was an odor of mechanical heat. No rear drive shaft installed at the moment (replacement on hand). Slight leak at the angle gear which was my first concern that it was out of fluid and starting to bind but no whining noises.
But I also saw something on this site about de-lamination of the emergency brake shoes. Is this a common problem? No brake issues and disk pads have plenty of life left.
Any other ideas?
Thanks in advance.

It's pretty common . They are 16-17 years old.
You have to remove the rear calipers and rotors to inspect them, replace and adjust
I'm not quite sure when the break occurred but on m y 1999 you adjust them with star wheels in each where, on my 2005 they adjust at the inside lever.
Be careful searching for hot stuff with your fingers.

Yeah, and remember: If you can locate the part that smells burnt, you don´t have to touch it. It IS hot

Also check the rear calipers are not seized. Another issue. If they are, and you have the vented rear rotors, the calipers are obsolete. You may be able to find a pair of re-manufactured ones if you are lucky. Volvo offers a replacement 'kit' which uses a different caliper, mount, pads and rotor. The 2000 V70R was a 1 year model for the rear brakes. Rear rotor back-plates are also obsolete.
Another point to check is the rear parking brake cables are free to move. They tend to seize as most folks think they are a non-service part, but I suggest stripping the rear parking brake system at least ever other year and cleaning and greasing. Check the cables where they mount to the rear shock-absorber mount. When they seize at the rear drum, they tend to break at that point.
Neil.
