Timing Belt Job Gone Wrong... '99 S70 T5
Re: Timing Belt Job Gone Wrong... '99 S70 T5
you may as well run different scenarios. fuel, spark, timing. Fuel pressure can be as simple as unscrewing the cap and pressing the shredder valve. If you do not get pressure at all, that is not good. Though a fuel pressure tool would be ideal.

That is something I'll check. I smelled fuel though, so I'm pretty sure it's getting fuel.angelglo wrote:you may as well run different scenarios. fuel, spark, timing. Yes, you know how stressed out I was about this! I was imagining that the mechanical tensioner flew off somewhere and destroyed the engine...abscate wrote:That's scary isn't it Marco? It sounds like you have destroyed your motor, then all of a sudden it's fixed.....
As stated by someone else, make sure you're getting that hum from the fuel pump. My fuel pump and fuel pump relay both went out when I put the car on jack stands for a morning and swapped out my front brake calipers, which had seized in the winter...
These cars can really test your faith.

So... today we moved around the cams SEVERAL times and still got nowhere. Motor is cranking, but still won't start. Tensioner is good now.
I put oil in each cylinder and put everything back together, and it still cranked and cranked and cranked, but it didn't start. There is a little knocking/tapping sound, but I can't tell where it's coming from. Could that be the valves, possibly? It isn't horribly loud, and if I didn't know, I probably wouldn't worry about it. But it's enough to notice.
The fuel pump is definitely going, though. I hear it when I try to start the car and I smell fuel in the engine bay.
We are going to do a compression test next and see what that brings back. I should be aiming for 180 psi, correct?

Should be nice and even across cylinders. 150-180 and even. Fresh battery, and throttle plate wide open

I didn't do a compression test, but I think we got the timing figured out. Another one of my cousins, who is more experienced with engines than all of us, took a look with us today. We adjusted everything, and the timing is as good as we're going to get it.
Pulled some spark plugs, all nasty and fouled up with gas and oil. They are disgusting, and it's a miracle the car even started before.
We all agreed the clicking I was talking about sounds like it's coming from the CVVT hub, and not the valves. Either the hub or the solenoid on the cam cover. Do I need to reset the CVVT, or should I just put in new plugs and try my luck? If I need to reset the CVVT, how do I do that?

Check back to Lee's post at the very beginning of the thread: step 1 set timing, step 2 set the CVVT, step 3 start it up.

I don't remember, but that's something I'll check on. My cousin said that the crank may be 180 degrees off, but none of us considered the CPS.hamtv wrote:Did you take off the crank sensor by any chance? I once had trouble starting my 98 GLT because I installed the CPS 180 degrees off. Same goes with the rotor.. but I'm not sure if there's such thing on a 99.

Replaced all of the spark plugs, still sounds like it wants to turn over but it won't. I haven't reset the timing again, but I'd like to see if we can figure out if the motor is getting spark first. After a couple of times cranking it, I noticed the car is "coughing" during cranking. You can see it shake the intercooler outlet hose. I think it is just exhaust from it trying to start, I just thought it was strange.
Here is a video where you can hear the knocking. Is it possible it's the VVT solenoid that needs to be replaced? It sounds like it's knocking there or at the hub. Do you guys think the knocking is the result of what's causing the car not to start?
