XC90 steering wheel buttons not working

Post by cecs »

Hi,

I have a Volvo XC90 2.4 D5 2004.
But none of the buttons on the steering wheel are working - not volume for radio, not cruise control.

Sympthoms are following:
* buttons on the steering wheel are lighted up
* buttons on the steering wheel are not working, none of them
* horn is not working

I have checked internet over and over and have 3 conclusions, what might be faulty:
1) steeling wheel lining/wire/connections - but in this case they would work periodically and the buttons would not be lighted up;
2) steering wheel module (swm) - in this case also the turn signals would not work and also the headlight would be faulty;
3) clockspring - in this case the airbag light should light up in dashboard.

I have heard that this is common issue for V70, XC70, S60, S80, XC90, so I believe someone had similar problem before.

Please share, what was the solution.

Thanks in advance!

perhaps the contacts on the backs of the buttons are dirty or corroded. Has the wheel ever been off for repairs? Is there a separate connector on the SWM for the buttons? perhaps that is not properly connected/contacting, also, has the radio ever been removed? maybe the leads are not connected at the module for the radio.
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)
