Strut mounts for V70: buy INA or KYB?

Post by 1337 »

I'm planning to replace the strut mounts and spring seats on the front of my 1998 V70.

I'm following the Volvo 850 suspension parts spreadsheet that's linked from this MVS post.

Admittedly, the spreadsheet may be a few years old now. In any case, the spreadsheet says that FCP Groton (now FCP Euro, I think) sells Genuine Volvo strut mounts for $68. This is part number 3546189. I'm not finding blue-box strut mounts labeled as Genuine Volvo on FCP Euro now. But, a search on FCP Euro does turn up these two strut mount brands, which are labeled as "OEM Quality:"

INA strut mount: https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... 0-87-424-a
KYB strut mount: https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... ont-sm5165

I'm not trying to save money here; I want to do this the right way. Does anyone have experience with either or both of these strut mounts? If so, do you have advice on which one I should buy?

I haven't bought strut mounts in a long time (knock on wood), and I am actually not sure who makes the Volvo ones. I thought it was INA, but IPD says it is Sachs/Boge http://www.ipdusa.com/products/5458/112 ... nt-bearing?.

I might go with the IPD product in this case, that's not a bad price (second best I saw was Amazon https://www.amazon.com/Volvo-Suspension- ... 009PQFSIE/). Lisle web site isn't working for me right now but the blue box part is probably well over $100, even from them.

There was a discussion here on MVS about OEM and who the manufacturers were. I read of Sachs-Boge as OEM supplier for these mounts.

However nothing wrong with both INA and KYB as manufacturers of suspension components. INA does a ton of quality stuff for VW, Mercedes, Volvo etc.

KYB was OEM manufacturer for Mazda and makes suspension components for dozens of brand names.

Nothing shabby on both counts

I wouldn't write off Blue Box without doing some shopping.
Several dealers are offering very competitive pricing on
factory Volvo parts via online sales these days.

Some KYB stuff is good some not so. Gas shocks for Audi are not great, if you can find Boge-Sachs mounts I would definitely go there. These parts will be obsolete (OEM I mean) and if Boge makes OEM grab them when you can. Can no longer find Boge for my A6 and the replacement stuff is awful.

Yes many dealers are selling online at good prices, but still no one is beating Lisle's prices, and Tasca is consistently second place. Tasca wants $107 for this (http://www.tascaparts.com/oe-volvo/3546189), plus of course you will pay a premium from them for shipping.

I think I would trust IPD with their part or if you can buy OEM Volvo somewhere else for cheaper, I'd go with that... yeah, sachs/boge...the parts do look pretty much identical on FCP site. If you can find Lemforder you might look for a mount from them- good reputation...Luckily unlike the spring seats, this isn't a part that goes bad very quickly either way. I typically have replaced these with a strut replacement but have gone through 2 or 3 spring seats in the time that the strut needs replacement. Ina might be fine- just see if you can get a close-up of their part compared to a genuine Volvo part and see if they look as beefy.
